Cradle Cap remedies!

Hello ladies. My son (11 weeks) is experiencing a mild case of cradle cap and I can't seem to find anything that will work to fix this! He doesn't really have patches of dry skin, just some very thin flakey spots. But his issue seems to be the oozing, and not the flakes. Mind you, where the flakes are, are not where the oozing is. Ugh, it's frustrating because literally everything I've tried has not worked. Has anyone experienced this and what worked to get rid of it? What I'm doing now is washing everyday with J&J w/ gentle rubbing/scrubbing with a soft baby towel or the little plastic brush you get from L&D. The baby brushes seem to aggravate the oozing areas more which cause more oozing. Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Re: Cradle Cap remedies!

  • My LO experienced a very mild case around 5 or 6 weeks. The only thing I used on her was the Mustela brand foaming newborn shampoo. You can get it from the website or my local target carries it as well. It says to let it sit for a minute or 2 & then to rinse. I either rinsed her head under the shower or took a wet washcloth & gently rubbed it out. After she got out & her hair dried she had some dandruff looking stuff that I got out with a lice comb. Within a week she was all cleared up. But she did not have any oozing. Mustela also carries a cream of some sort to go hand in hand with the foam shampoo. But I never had to use that.

  • My pediatrician recommended coconut oil massage in the hair and wait about 10 minutes, then back comb gently with a small bristle comb (might only be able to do a small patch a day depending how well baby takes to this) and then wash out in the bath.. She said we can use a bit of head and shoulders 2x/week. We didn't have to use head and shoulders after the oil and bath though
  • Our pedi said to use head and shoulders. Cleared it up within a week!
  • Sorry I should've read slower, I don't have experience with oozing but Head and Shoulders might be painful.
  • Oh same here I never read the oozing part sorry :( maybe try breast milk on the oozing areas to heal it? I know breast milk has amazing healing properties... I second pp about head and shoulders probably actually causing pain.. I don't have experience with the oozing though :(
  • I use the Honest Company healing balm or breast milk on any little stretches my LO gets. Love that it's organic & it seriously works.
  • Not sure if oozing is a common effect of cradle cap but safflower oil is a natural remedy. Usually available at any grocery store
  • My suggestion is go to your pedi since it is oozing it may have gotten infected. My DD does not have cradle cap but we are dealing with eczema that is on her face that got infected. The cream they prescribed cleared the spots that were oozing in like 2 days.
  • I would suggest asking your pediatrician about the oozing. However, I used coconut oil on my son's head. Left it on for about 30 minutes, took a fine tooth baby comb and scraped the flakes away. Then I washed his hair. It's been about a week and his flakes haven't come back! If you don't want to buy coconut oil (it can be pricey), my pediatrician told me you could also use baby oil.
  • Breast milk!  My son had cradle cap, I rubbed some breast milk on it two days in a row, used some coconut oil later that day, let it sit for awhile then rubbed lightly with a baby wash cloth.  By day 3 there was no sign of cradle cap!  Good luck

  • @tracij12 I washed 4 times
  • Breast milk. I use a bit of breast milk on my DD head twice a week and we have not had any issues with cradle cap at all.
  • Olive oil, or any other oil I'm sure.. Leave it in for ten minutes, then wash with h baby shampoo. Comb with a fine tooth comb. There will be a lot of little flakes coming out. May have to repeat a few days.. Worked for us, and my lo had it bad
  • Anybody else experience hair loss with cradle cap? My LO is 11 weeks, was born with a full head of hair and I noticed tonight it's falling out.
  • My son had it (no oozing though) and my doctor recommended Selsun Blue. I was apprehensive to try it so I tried oil first and it seemed to get worse. Finally I tried the Selsun Blue but made sure it was the non medicated kind. It cleared up after about two washes. Both times there was a layer of dry skin that loosened up so I gently brushed it out for the next few days.

Yes my LO's hair has been falling out too. My mom tells me it's normal and that it happened to me too.
  • I used avacado oil, quite a bit, and brushed his whole head in it. Next day it was gone! I even noticed his hair grew more since then.

I don't think the two are actually related but it's completely normal for babies to lose hair. LO does not have cradle cap but is losing hair on her right side because that's the side she prefers to turn her head while sleeping.
  • I used my earth momma angel baby nipple butter on his head and back combed with a soft brush. Took care of it in 2 days.
  • Thanks ladies, for all the great suggestions! So far what seems to be working for us is Aquaphor.
