January 2016 Moms

Snow storm labor

We're in a minor snowstorm here - Minnesota - and I'm 37 weeks and 4 days. My mom went into labor with my sister during a snowstorm...and needless to say, I would be totally okay if baby decided he was ready to come out! Just like the full moon, you know they say snowstorms supposedly induce labor! We can hope right?! We're only 15 minutes or so away from the hospital. What can I say, I'm at this point where I'm hoping everything is a sign of upcoming labor! The snow is beautiful. It's peaceful outside. No shoe prints, no animal tracks, no tire tracks.

Re: Snow storm labor

  • That's exciting!

  • The December snowstorms are always so exciting and beautiful ... Less so in January and February ... And March
  • It is exciting. @ChrissyD1203 much agreed! I promise I would not be excited in March. Sometimes even April! But this is only the second measurable amount of snow we've really had this year...so it's very exciting.
  • I live in Michigan and usually we would have snow but michigan weather lately is so unpredictable. The other day is was 60° and raining. Then I went into work and they had the air on. This does not feel like a normal michigan Christmas time.
  • I'm in Michigan as well and I am TOTALLY ok with not having snow!! I have the worst anxiety about driving and even being a passenger when there is snow on the ground! I'm so thankful there isn't any because it would probably give me horrible blood pressure!
  • My second was born during the middle of a massive snow storm. (BC, Canada) It was quite lovely and peaceful, although it did take my midwife almost an hour and a half to get to my house.
  • I am jealous. We are not even going o have a white Christmas here in Illinois!
  • Beautiful snow! My first was born during an incredible ice storm during February. It happened after I was admitted to the hospital and I had a long labor and was oblivious to what was happening outside, but the day I took her home I was shocked to see how much ice there was. I have heard about full moons and weather changes bringing babies but don't know the details. So maybe it's baby time for you?? :)
  • I'm only 36+3 and while there's no snow where I am in NC, I keep hoping baby will be on her way soon...I know she should cook longer, but I'm getting restless! I want to meet her! My mom is so worried about her being born near Christmas because she says LO will get lots of combined presents. It's so funny to me that she's worried about my baby not having a ton of gifts! She can come on Christmas if she likes :) I'll be nearly 38 weeks by then.

It would be a pleasant "tradition" if your munchkin arrives during this storm!

  • DD was born in the middle of a snowstorm, too. Luckily we went to the hospital because of bleeding and I ended up going into labor so it didn't matter that it took a long time to get there, but bringing her home was SO nerve-wracking. I think I rode backward to watch her the entire time. DH took all back roads (otherwise the fastest route is the interstate) and it took an hour and a half to get home, as opposed to the average non-snowy route of 20 minutes.
  • The SO and I live in Ohio and it has been unseasonably warm. However, I am not complaining one of my biggest fears is being really pregnant and falling due to freezing rain.
  • I had a scheduled csection with #2 who was born in a snowstorm in Feb. All day long we heard the chimes of babies being born. I want to say the nursery was full. So we're all the rooms.

I swear, every year I say "this is the strangest Michigan winter." But really, 60+ degrees and only one day of snow so far? Not complaining (I am not made for snow and ice) but this is definitely an odd one.

Edit: words suck. So does swipe.
  • No Baby here :-( but I did have a doctor's appointment today and am now measuring 3 cm and 50% effaced vs 2 cm and 40% effaced from about a week and a half ago. My tummy is measuring small so I have another ultrasound next week on tuesday before my dr appointment. Hopefully everything is okay. I'll be almost 39 weeks at that point! It's been a weird winter here..it's really only snowed twice so far.
  • It's way too warm here. We have been in the 50s and rainy. I miss the snow we usually get by this time.
  • My biggest fear is that when I go into labor its gunna be during a snow storm. we live about 30 minutes from the hospital so not so bad but when there's God knows how much snow? I'm just terrified I'm not gunna make it lol! But in Long Island we've been having that 60 degree December. I'm a little upset though because after moving back from Florida I was hoping to see snow! Lol but good luck and hopefully you get a beautiful Christmas present :)
  • I'm convinced it will blizzard when my baby boy decides to come! It's been in the 40s and rainy here in Maine which is NOT the norm. So I fully expect a late January Nor'easter to be what welcomes him to the world! I hate driving in the snow so I'm ok with it holding it off so far, but it could be snowy and cozy my whole maternity leave and I'd be perfectly happy!
  • They have been talking on the radio and news about how the Atlanta area should prepare for a bad winter, and while it was nearly 70 today, I am freaking out that by the end of January there will be some sort of crazy storm. I am from NY and am perfectly capable of traversing snowy roads, however it is all the other people I am worried about!
  • @Ameehan81592 you'll make it!! I'd maybe have a back up plan forgetting to the hospital though! Better safe than sorry!

I'm okay with winter driving, I've lived in MN my entire life, but as @kmo8986 said, it's the other people on the road that terrify me. And boyfriend's driving..he gives me a heart attack almost every time we go out
  • It's been warm here too, compared to every other year. It's been between 10 and 40 degrees and normally is way below 0 with windchill. I'm definitely not complaining about it being warmer though. I just wish the snow would stay.
  • I live in Ocean City, NJ, America's greatest family resort!!! (Memorial Day through Labor Day, that is. And only if you like dry towns.) and just saw on the news that it's going to be 70 freaking degrees on Christmas Eve! Whaaaat? I hope it stays super mild into the new year, that way I know it won't snow considering I'm 50 minutes away from the hospital and that alone gives me anxiety!!
  • I effin hate snow.
  • It's gotten chillier here in the last couple of days. The snow makes our flatlands a lot prettier! But my mid January I'm pretty sick of it..
  • Luckily I can spit on the hospital from my house. So even though I live in Pittsburgh, the unpredictable weather capital of the world, and I'm not due until the end of January, I'm not too worried.
  • @hannahduff3 My sister and her husband live in Pittsburgh, he works at UPMC. Is that where you will deliver?
  • there are multiple hospitals that are UPMC in Pittsburgh but yes I'm delivering at one :)
  • As much as I love the snow and how much we have been getting (Lake Tahoe, NV/CA) my hospital is a 45 minutes to an hour drive away from where I live. Besides the fact that I will be driving from the top of the mountain; down. Definitely hoping things are calm whenever I go in to labor. 36+5 and we've been getting snow every day this week so far, but not terrible.
  • Good luck @cjd&k !! Drive safe! If you begin having contractions is there a friend or a family member's place you could hang out at and relax at until going into active labor?
  • Sorry, I just saw your reply back @bkeep22
No, I don't. The doctor recommended I go to Costco and walk around when my contractions are so far until they're closer together. (Costco is about 10mins from the hospital)
  • Had a snow storm today in Maine, I was convinced I would have him during it since my husband got called in to work. I even went out and walked the dog in 6inches of unplowed snow! No such luck...yet! Anyone actually end up having a snow storm baby?
