Any specific yoga poses (or other ideas) to help sciatica pain?

Hi ladies, hope you're all having a good weekend.  I, unfortunately, am not.  I somehow tweaked my back while carrying things in from the car last night and am having sharp pain in my lower left back that shoots down my leg when I walk (which sounds like sciatica, based on googling.)  I searched and found a prior thread about it from November and multiple people mentioned yoga helping, but I was wondering if there were any specific poses (or any other stretches) that helped anyone?  I saw downward dog mentioned but that was it.

Also open to any other suggestions!  I've tried warm bath (nothing) and Tylenol (nothing) and am hoping other yoga poses/stretches might help me be able to walk without horrible pain.  Downward dog seems to help temporarily, but I'd love to have other options to string together for more relief.

Also, is pregnancy over yet?????  I am seriously SO DONE with the random carnival of pain/discomfort.

  • Try the pigeon pose, it helps with sciatica.

  • I had to do PT for mine. Try sitting in a chair, rest your ankle of one leg on the knee of the other. If it doesn't feel like it's stretching, try leaning forward a bit, or resting the foot instead of knee. Also, maybe your SO can gently lift the leg up with you on your back to see if that stretches it? Wish I could give you better descriptions. Hope you find something to help.
  • Please, please, please tell us! I just did two yoga videos and feel a little better. The pigeon pose did feel good and I was surprised able to get so low and have my belly fit. Any others?

  • Also try some gentle cat/cow stretches.
  • I have this and just being on all fours helps because it take some pressure of the baby away from your back. Cat/ cow does help and so does child's pose. I do a modified child's pose in bed sometimes where I'll lean over a pillow instead of going all the way down because that is too uncomfortable with the belly. Also keep your hips a little wider in this pose than you would normally do when youre not pregnant. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much, guys.  This has been incredibly painful.  :(  I'm going to try all the suggested poses/stretches today and cross my fingers for improvement!
  • @maureenmce I'm in the same boat. I've used Google to look up stretches, I've asked my OB and my back specialist (specializes in spinal manipulations) and nothing works :( it has honestly been an awful 3rd trimester between the pain and the constant self pity party because I'm unable to do anything for myself. Hopefully, our babies come soon and we can actually function like real grown ups again!
  • I found sitting on the a birthing ball for an hour each night has really helped my sciatic pain
  • @mrscammack - I ordered a birthing ball today!  When you sit on it do you just sort of move around in a circle or back and forth?  Or just whatever feels good?  Or do you just sit on it?  Thanks.  :)

@BarrettJ89 - I am seriously counting the days to hold on to my sanity!
  • I also use the birth ball. You have to make sure it's the right size and your legs are at the right angle. I watched some YouTube videos. Sometimes I just sit on it, rock side to side, circles, or bounce a little. Whatever feels good.
  • @maureenmce I mostly rock back and forth on it and move my hips in circles, basically whatever feels good at the time :)
