So whatcha readin?

I'm in between books right now and trying to decide what's next... I'm rereading The Goldfinch by Donna Tarte for like the fifth time because it's my go to when I'm picking something else out...

So anything good that you've read recently or have been wanting to try?

Here are some other books I've read that were really great:
Wherever There is Light-Peter Golden
In A Dark Dark Wood- Ruth Ware
The Martian- Andy Weir
All The Light We Cannot See- Anthony Doerr
You- Caroline Kepnes
Night Film- Marisha Pessl
At the Water's Edge- Sara Gruen
Station Eleven- Emily St. John Mandel
The Nightingale- Kristin Hanna
Everything I Never Told You- Celeste Ng
The Girl on the Train- Paula Hawkins
Sharp Objects- Gillian Flynn
Luckiest Girl Alive- Jessica Knoll

Re: So whatcha readin?

  • I just finished Kate Mortons "The Lake House". All of her novels are moody historical mysteries woven between the past and the present. Perfect for a nice snowed in evening. I'm also trying to get through Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander 2) but its slow going, because I keep putting it off.

Have you read other Outlander series books? I've had a few people tell me to get started with them...
  • I will be starting Neil Degrasse Tyson's 'Death By Blackhole and Other Cosmic Quandries' next week.

    I love books!!!!!!

I just started a book called Mr Pye by Mervyn Peake. I can't say much about it as I only just started, but Peake published a trilogy of fantasy/gothic books in the 1940s and 50s (entitled Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone) and they are three of my favourite books. There's no magic in them, but for anyone who likes the gothic style and a rather dark (and at times absurd) story, I highly recommend them.

I also recently finished 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. He is one of the only contemporary writers that I truly love. His novels are always surreal and usually involve some fascinating information about Japanese history (one of the major themes of his works is the way that historical trauma reverberates throughout a nation's unconscious). I can't recommend his books enough, especially The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore.

Some of my other favourite books:

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
    The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence
The Rainbow by D. H. Lawrence
    Pilgrim by Timothy Findley
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (if you've ever read Jane Eyre you MUST read Wide Sargasso Sea!)
Mr Ma and Son by Lao She
    Macroscope by Piers Anthony
Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter
    Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov
    Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol
1984 by George Orwell (on obvious choice, but such a wonderful book for anyone who hasn't read it)
The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad
Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein

ETA: I've been meaning to read The Goldfinch so I might pick it up once I'm done Mr Pye!
  • I read my book every day. lol jk!

It just sits on my coffee table and looks pretty. :)

I'm reading The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman and also I Once Was A Nice Guy by Juddy Ferguson

  • @PinkLady2015 - I'm currently reading the Outlander series and an on "The Fiery Cross". I love the series so far but they are long books.
  • Any horror books are my favorite....

I just reread the Walking Dead Rise of the Governor. Love it.
  • The Harvard Medical School's Guide to Tai Chi. Part professional development, part curiousity, part needing another way to calm down.
  • Currently I'm reading:

Maddaddam by Margaret Atwood (last in the series, so incredible)
Drawing of the Three by Stephen King (Dark Tower series)
The Clash of Kings by George RR Martin (Song of Ice and fire series)
Wind up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
Tale of the Body Thief by Anne Rice (Vampire Chronicles)

I love books. I'm always reading at least three at a time because I get so excited haha.
  • I am on a hiatus right now due to lack of time but recently read
A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout and loved it.
Dark places and Sharp Object by Gillian Flynn as you mentioned.
All of Lisa Genovas books were great--Inside the Obriens, Love Anthony and of course Still Alice.
  • Love the Outlander books too... I'm on the 4th one! Definitely takes me longer to get through but worth it!

  • Just read "Thought I Knew You"-Kate Moretti. It was an easy read and pretty good
Before that I got caught up on all the Game of Thrones books.  I can't remember before that because it took a VERY long time to read those, but they were very good.

  • THANK YOU for this post! I love reading but I've totally gotten out of it and then it's so hard to get back into it. I'll be watching this post :)
  • Love reading these! I'm almost always in the middle of reading something but my downtime has been spent sleeping. Looking forward to finding a good read soon though! I'll keep up on this thread!
  • I've been rereading the Harry Potter books. I am currently on the Half Blood Prince. When I'm done this series I've got a Christmas horror book to dive into or maybe Christopher Moore's Christmas story.
  • I'm on book 7 of the Outlander series. I started the series in August... So I've been a reading machine these past few months. The show is really good, too. I absolutely cannot wait until it returns in April.
  • I'm reading the handmaid's tale but before I was reading Stiff, the curious life of human cadavers.

Also, goodreads is amazing. If anyone wants to be buddies on that I think the risk of stranger danger is pretty low.

  • Ooh, great post idea! I am currently on a month long break from grad school, and I am SO looking forward to reading for pleasure again! There are some great suggestions here--thanks, ladies!
  • I'm about to start reading the night circus for book club

  • Just finished the October List. It's pretty good! Love any of Liane Moriarty's books and the Girl on the Train was great!!
  • I really liked the night circus @Lindsayleigh1989
I need to finish All the light you cannot see.
Before that I had just read the Art of asking (nonfiction).
I think the queasiness made it hard for me to focus on a book, but maybe I can start up again....

  • Oh good! I hadn't heard much about it yet!

@Weville Christopher Moore is the best! Have you read Lamb? One of my favourites - so hilarious (warning: may not be funny if you are religious and easily offended by some light teasing of Christianity). I haven't heard of his Christmas story, is it new? I might have to make a trip to the book store

Harry Potter is my all-time favourite. I re-read it every couple of years. My last re-read was while pregnant with DD, big mistake. The hormones! I was sobbing inconsolably during the sadder parts.
  • I read the Outlander books and really enjoyed them. I was sad to finish the series, but I did take breaks between some of the books when I needed something fresh, as they can be kind of heavy.

Last January I started a "Reading Challenge" with BIL (this one: https://www.popsugar.com/love/Reading-Challenge-2015-36071458?crlt.pid=camp.RTlcdYOWNcmE ). One of my resolutions this year is to try to read a bit every night before bed, like I used to, because I had pretty abysmal progress this past year compared to how much I used to read before DD.

I'm currently reading "Fiela's Child" by Dalene Mattee (for "a book originally written in a different language"), I'm really enjoying it.
Recently finished: The Light Between Two Oceans by M.L. Stedman (liked it, but found the characters frustrating); The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared by Allan Karlsson (enjoyed it, it was weird and funny); and gave up on Catch 22 by Joseph Heller (will go back to it later, just wasn't in the mood and couldn't connect to the characters which is really important to me).
  • @DobbysSock I have Lamb too! It is so frickin' funny!!! The Christopher Moore Christmas story is actually called The Stupidest Angel. I think my pregnant brain had a memory meltdown.

I hear on the Potter tears!!! There are times I've been such a mess (and the rest have been planning a hogwarts nursery or trying to convince the DH that Albus is an awesome name).
  • @Weville The Stupidest Angel is hilarious! Back when I was a librarian, a furious patron stormed up to my desk and DEMANDED we remove it from our collection. Turns out, she had checked out the audiobook and played it for her grandchildren. She thought it was a children's story because it had a cartoon angel on the cover, and she didn't read the (vulgar and hilarious) description on the back that makes it VERY clear that it's NOT for kids. Who gets an audiobook from the Adult section and plays it for children without even reading the description?! Needless to say, it remained in our collection.
  • @PleaseSendPicklesNow Oh my Gord I just laughed my ass off. The look on those poor kids faces must have been priceless. Seriously who takes out a book (audio or otherwise) without reading what it is about. Especially for kids. I love the "I don't like it so ban it logic". By that token I suppose I should petition my library to remove Twilight. I think it sends a bad message (glittery vampires, come on!)
  • I'm reading the handmaid's tale but before I was reading Stiff, the curious life of human cadavers.

LOVED Stiff! I'm actually a huge fan of all of Mary Roach's books and I'd recommend the rest of them if you liked Stiff. She cracks me up... In a sciencey anthropological way.
  • @Weville I've been working on Harrison... nickname Harry. DH isn't sold
  • @DobbysSock Haha. I tried Harrison too, but as a middle name. If it's a boy we're naming him after my grandpa so that's already sorted
  • Anything by Jodi Picoult is great. Her books are controversial and make you think. I have read everything by her and am now currently trying to find an author that is similar to her.
