3rd Trimester

33 weeks pregnant suffering with high blood pressure

33 weeks pregnant & spent the last 24 hours in hospital being monitored for high blood pressure & swelling. Thankfully with bed rest & being medication now means im back to healthy level & I don't have pre eclampsia but I'm border line now. I got to go home at 3pm which was so good I feel so much more relaxed at home in my own bed. Now means I have to start maternity leave now rather than in 2 weeks time as I had planned. Crazy how quickly things can deteriorate in the third trimester. I'm going to be on bed rest now as much as possible until she is ready to be delivered hopefully after 37 weeks so 4 weeks to get my life ready & rest.

Any tips from other mums who have been through similar challenges in pregnancy?

So grateful to be at prince of wales private hospital under the best care.

  • Fingers crossed your little one is able to stay put as long as possible.

  • Literally going through the exact same thing now. I'm laying in the hospital bed... Was sent here yesterday morning after my checkup. I don't have preeclampsia and my blood pressure isn't ridiculously high but it's obviously high enough. I'm hoping to go home today since they drew the blood again for the same tests. I was not expecting this at all!
  • Just went through this exact same thing. We had our little guy at 38 weeks after 3 weeks of bed rest. Sounds like you are in good hands. Hang in there, it will go by before you know it.
  • I had hypertension with Ds that became severe around 32 weeks. As long as I was lying on my left side (yay for bedrest) and taking medication it remained mostly controlled. I did however develop severe preeclampsia and was induced at 36 weeks, but other than a couple extra days in the hospital for jaundice Ds did really well. Puzzles, knitting (YouTube has great videos for beginners if you don't know how already), Netflix, get some good books, maybe an adult coloring book or two. It is hard to be in bed rest and all the extra appointments and testing can be daunting, but at the end of the day it is all for you and your baby's health. Good luck!
  • This happened to me at 35 weeks- I'm 37 now. So hangin there- do nothing and hopefully with meds your little one will continue cooking
  • I haven't had high blood pressure as bad as you but I do suffer from uncomfortable swelling in the hands and feet. Try and control your sodium levels, as I've heard too much in your diet can make fluid retention worse. High potassium foods such as bananas have made quite a difference to my swelling, as I think potassium helps kidney function which also reduces fluid retention. Finally drink plenty of water and relax as much as possible. If your hands swell hold them up above your head for a few minutes, I find this can help. Get your feet up as well, and keep them cool.
  • I've had both my boys early with CS due to preclampsia so I totally understand. Just hang in there and know that so much has improved with this that they will take care of you and you and baby will be fine. Try to distract yourself and not stress that will raise bp. Good luck Mama, you got this :)
