December 2015 Moms

Pressure to induce! Long, sorry.

So I'm 41 weeks on Monday based on lmp. My dating scan would put me at 40 and 3 on Monday. I have pretty long cycles so I'm not surprised I'm over. Anyway md on Friday basically stated " I like all babies out in mom's arms by 41 weeks " he wanted to start an induction Saturday. I asked him for a biophysical profile first he agreed. Everything looked good so I decided to hold out over the weekend and revaluate the convo on Monday. I thought current recommendations were to hold of closer to 42 weeks? I'm going to try and talk to him Monday about this but I'm curious what is everyone else who is overdue MDS doing? Pushing for inductionnor waiting? End of day I want a healthy baby. My last was all natural and a pretty easy birth experience. I was hopeful to have a similar experience. I typically see a midwife and I'm really missing her right now. Just a different additude towards pregnancy I guess.

That's tough. You want to listen to your body and what your previous history tells you, but also hard to argue when the MD has a different opinion. My OBGYN's office says they prefer to not let you go past 41 weeks, but they didn't say it was mandated or anything so it sounded like they were open to the discussion. Mine basically let me choose when I wanted to induce after 40 weeks since my body was so favorable (dilation/effacement wise). Listen to your body and do what you feel is right for you and baby.

    Good luck!

  • I will be 41 weeks tomorrow and will be heading for an induction first thing in the morning. My OB prefers to induce by 41 weeks because the risk starts to go up for the baby after that (aging placenta, low fluid, meconium aspiration--all become more likely). I had a US at 40+3 and fluid and everything looked good, my BP was slightly elevated (and had been very consistent) however it wasn't high enough that my OB wanted to do anything but order a set of labs (which were fine).

I'm confident in my LMP, my cycle was 28-30 days for a few months prior to conception so I am also confident in my EDD. I also see a midwife and they don't schedule inductions until 12 days past the EDD which I am not comfortable with due to the potential complications.
  • My doctor wanted to induce at 40 weeks...then at 41. I finally asked if we could wait til 42 and he gave me the legal speech about aging placenta, etc... But he said ultimately it's my choice what I want to do. He can't force me, all he can do is tell me the possible things to consider. So, we decided to wait til after Christmas. I went to bed with bad cramping and woke up feeling even more so, so hopefully we won't even need that.

The doctors need to tell you all the legal things to consider, but it's your choice. Basically, this close to holidays, induction appointments are hard to come by, so the pressure may be stronger because of scheduling convenience. You're the momma. The choice is up to you!
  • Thanks for replys. I guess I was blind sided Friday because he was being pretty easy going about things untill then. Our hospital is small and basically if I decide to induce I just have to call in and then come in. There are currently only 2 obygns. Mine goes out of town on Tuesday. The other obygn is new.to our hospital. Basically the only reason I would consider induction tommorow is if baby looks like she needs out and a little hesitation about the new md. I'm questioning if inducing so I can have the same MD is a good enough reason. I'm thinking of telling them I'll agree to induce the Saturday after Christmas if everything looks good until then and obviously if baby hasn't come on her own. I would like to meet the other md at and see how she would procede with I induction.

  • My MD will let me go to 41 with no medical intervention but will absolutely do something before 42 weeks. He just explained that due dates are usually wrong it's more of a "guess" and having your body naturally go into labor is the best case scenario.
  • @sarahjulypsu Don't let fear of a different doctor make you do something you don't want to do! My mom had that type of thing happen with me and it was awful. Any doctor there could deliver a baby. Basically all they really need to be there for (complications aside) is paperwork and catching the baby. However, if it really is a big deal, you are free to make the choice to induce!
  • Over here they don't induce you until 42 weeks, if baby is fine and you're fine then it isn't a problem!
I'm 41+1 today and me and baby are doing fine (granted I'm uncomfortable but he's doing fine)
  • That's a tough decision. I would like to tell you what happened to me. My OB suggested I induce at 41 weeks. I finally agreed after long discussions with my husband which I thank God everyday that I did. I ended up getting induced at 41+1 and finally delivered on 41+3 (39 hour labor). My baby had swallowed meconium from being 10 days late and had to be aspirated at birth for 25 mins before I could hold her. She luckily had meconium only in her belly but had it gone into her lungs, it would have been a much different story. I was totally against inductions before I gave birth and now my opinion has completely changed. I gave birth on December 10th, 2015 to a beautiful and healthy baby girl, and I wonder what would have happened if I had gone any longer. Just something to think about...

Your story sounds very much like mine with my daughter, and why I've decided to have an earlier induction with this LO (on EDD instead of waiting until after 41w).

    This^^

I am terrified of going to 41 (currently 40+1) weeks even. My midwives have me booked for a bio US at 41+2 and I am terrified to go that long. That being said they are on board for whatever I want and the only reason we booked the US is because the technicians are soooo busy we have to book well in advance and also because I'm hoping and praying baby comes before I have to worry about it. If I am still pregnant on Tuesday at my next appointment, I will 100% push for induction by Friday which will put me at 40+6. Way too scared to wait although I know the chances of anything going wrong are still very low even until 42 weeks.
  • My midwife group won't induce me until 42ish weeks. My son came on his own at 41+2 and I'm now 40+2 and really hoping baby girl comes soon!! I'm scheduled for a biophysical profile tomorrow. Usually they wait until 41w, but with the holiday things are super booked up so I took the only appt they had this week. My periods are super regular, always 28 days, so I guess my body just likes to overcook babies a bit.
  • The hospital I'm seen at will let women go to 42 weeks, but my doctor gave me the choice. I will be getting my membranes stripped Wednesday (day before my due date, he will not strip before 40 weeks but due to holiday I will be getting it done at 39+6) and scheduling my induction for 41 weeks even though he does not see me making it that far.
