Morning** ladies... So I have pretty much been up the last two days and nights coughing. I went to my OB appt Friday and she gave me antibiotics and said to take Delsum ( over the counter ) cough meds. It can only be taken every 12 hours. It is NOT helping at all. Ribs are hurting, throat feels like razor blades. Any other pregnancy safe cough meds y'all can think of ?

Edit : crazyyyy typo due to insomnia

Wait, is this post only meant for Mormons? Funny typo. I've been living on a concoction of sliced lemon, orange, garlic cloves, ginger chunks, honey and boiling water - it's great for when you feel illness coming on, so might not do much for you but at the very least the honey will sooth your throat.

  • I just worry about coughing so much I am putting stress on baby. Not to mention how bad my ribs hurt. This is miserable.

  • I had a 3 week long bout of sickness that had me going to doctor because I couldn't stop coughing to get any sleep. I was prescribed a Z-pak (antibiotics), Medrol dose pack (steroids), and Tesslon Perles (cough med). I was also told to get regular Robitussin (expectorant). I asked about Mucinex but was told the dose is too high for pregnancy. Tesslon Perles is what actually allowed me to sleep. They are a category C but my OB assured me that baby is fully formed now so now it's about weighing risk.

This is totally me... I am in tears due to being so tired and my chest hurting. I know this is probably a dumb question but can coughing so much put stress on the baby? I went and got the Robitussin and it says I can take it every 4 hours. So I will try it and see.

  • I take robitussin regular, menthol cough drops and Vicks slathered on my chest, but my doc also said they won't give anything unless you're coughing up green/yellow and then put you on antibiotics. I still have a bruise at the top of my bump from shaking so much from coughing so hard! Hope yours clears up soon!

Coughing won't stress your baby unless you are actually having a hard time getting air. Even then baby will take what baby needs and leave you with the leftovers. I have asthma so it was important for my airways to remain clear. If you are coughing up anything, I recommend going to the doctor. Otherwise they won't give you anything like PP said and you just have to ride it out with some Vicks, cough drops, Robitussin and a warm humidifier. And of course LOTS of water.
