Preeclampsia + hospital stay

I have mild - preeclampsia.  On medical leave now from work. I'll be induced by 37 weeks unless my platelets dip down anymore, than induction will happen. I had to buy a PB cuff for home, it's always high 130-140/85-104    protein in my urine as well. kinda of surreal to know my 6 weeks turned into 3 weeks left in one night. Regular 34 week appointment with high PB at the beginning then checked at the end of the appointment then off to pee in a cup and blood work. Woke up with a headache that evening and called in, L&D trip turned into a 3 day stay for monitoring.

Anyone else experiencing this as well?

Re: Preeclampsia + hospital stay

  • I have to check my BP 5x a day right now. Not pre e, but getting there... Kinda scary, but baby is moving good and looks good on monitor so I feel better about that.

  • I have had mild preeclampsia for two weeks or so and had a hospital stay- and I started blood presure medication and have been in bed rest- and I was lucky enough to be told after two weeks things are looking much much better- my blood pressure is down and hopefully I should make it to 40 weeks- so try to stay positive- and take your medication, set an alarm if you forget, put your feet up (literally) and rest. If they have to induce you early, don't stress, iris what is best for you and your baby and luckily your team is aware. My cousin got induced early for preeclampsia last week and her baby is a healthy little bundle and so is she- even though it was 36 weeks. :)
  • Went for my 34wk appt Friday & was put on "unofficial" bedrest bc they think I'm heading towards preeclampsia. BP is 138/82. Never had high BP before. Have to go back on the 28th to check again. So nervous!
  • 34 wk check they found protein in my urine. But no high bp. Saturday I felt a bit off, so dh checked my bp and it was 121/74. Which is high for me. I'm usually 101/67ish. Saturday nite I had swollen feet also. Doc again Monday and will c how it goes. If there is protein again then they will do blood work.
  • Throughout my pregnancy I have routinely had blood pressure readings in a similar range (120s-140s/70s-80s) although I think I was only in the 140s once. My doctor had me get a cuff and monitor at home, but they continue to be pretty normal (I don't honestly trust the home cuff much even though it was expensive). My urine gets checked for protein at each appt and all has been well. I get some swelling in my feet and hands, but no headache or vision problems or abdominal pains. The doctor says the swelling is normal and that while he is watching for pre-e, he doesn't think I will develop it.

I've been worried about pre-e my entire pregnancy and it sounds like others with similar bp's to mine are being diagnosed, it makes me worry about whether I should be doing something more aggressive to check for it. I haven't had a 24 hr urine catch for example. How did those of you who got diagnosed get diagnosed?
  • @djdawn29a just wanted to say my blood pressure varies between the two ranges you mentioned. I don't have any other signs but no one has ever seemed concerned about that variance.
  • I am hoping for that same outcome.my bp always has run low as well as my normal temp. No headaches so I feeling positive.

My sister had pre-e with both her kids. With her 3 year old, it was undiagnosed until she went to the hospital with a blinding headache and vomiting. 36 hour labor with magnesium sulfate and 5 days in NICU for my nephew. With her 7 month old and a diff doctor, she was induced at 39 weeks, went med free, and had a 6 hour l&d and easy recovery. The point of this rambling is to say that, if monitored like you are being, pre-e doesn't doom you to a bad experience. Listen to your body and go in immediately if something feels wrong. Best of luck to you!

  • Yep :) this is me for the past few weeks. Thankfully they monitor you really closely! And we are far enough along now that our babies have great chances. Hang in there!!
  • 3rd time pre-e mama here. Honestly, how your pregnancy progresses going forward will depend entirely on how you're doing as monitored by your OB and how far along you are, as well as how baby is doing. My first pregnancy (with the twins), I was on hospital bedrest for 7 weeks prior to delivery and had them 6 weeks early. With my second pregnancy, I was diagnosed at 36+6 weeks and, due to his size and health as seen on u/s the same day, we opted to deliver him the next day at 37 weeks. This time, due to my history, I had been doing 24hr urine tests every other week. Now that I'm diagnosed, I'll have biweekly NSTs and an u/s tomorrow to check fluid levels. If things start going downhill, delivery is on the table since I'm approaching 37 weeks.

Watch your BPs, drink lots of water, decrease salt, rest and listen to the doc. Call for any changes in symptoms (headaches, dizziness, high BPs outside your new normal) and you should be ok. My biggest piece of advice is listen to your body and insist on being taken seriously. If you feel like you're being blown off, speak up! With the twins, I had been telling the docs for weeks that my fluid output was decreasing based on input and I was gaining pounds in days. By the time they finally ordered another 24hr urine on me, I was eclamptic and a very high seizure risk. We had an emergency c-section and we all ended up OK, but I wish I had been more insistent. Maybe I wouldn't have been in such a dangerous situation had I complained more.

  • emzie54  at my 34 week appointment i had a high BP so they checked again at the end of the appt. i think it was like 141/95  so that lead to urine and blood tests which confirmed.

flutepharm87   yup! i'm trusting my gut and listening to my body!

    good luck to all!

  • With my first my bp spiked at 28 weeks, but I did not throw any protein until 36 weeks which is when my bp really spiked.  My ds was born at 36w4d.  This time my bp had a little spike at 33 weeks.  They did a 24 hour urine catch and I have protein.  So I am being watched closely, bi-weekly NST and weekly drs appointments and ultrasounds every 2 weeks.  But as long as I am keeping my bp somewhat down and I am not showing any signs of headaches, swelling or dizziness then they will keep baby in for as long as it wants to stay.
Like PP said, rest, put your feet up, listen to what your dr says and listen to your body.  Good luck!

  • Just had this happen at doctors appointment today. High blood pressure at beginning of appt. And second test was more normal. My doc still ordered blood and urine tests and we go back tomorrow afternoon for a NST. Getting nervous a little with upcoming holidays because my SO'S family is coming into town. Hoping I don't have to do bed rest, but this might be my bodies way of saying I need to slow it down for remainder of pregnancy. Well know more tomorrow as far as what's going on with baby girl. Best of luck!

I am being watched now because of high BP. Was slightly elevated 2 weeks ago but nothing they were too concerned over. This morning my hands were pretty swollen but I figured it was from the holiday parties over the weekend. Well my BP was 120/100 then 130/100. No protein in my urine but was still sent for blood tests. Should get the results today. If my BP is still elevated at my appointment next Monday, we talk delivery options since I will be just at 37 weeks. May end up with a December baby. I've had a very easy pregnancy up to this point, so I'm really nervous and upset, which doesn't help. Hopefully the blood test results will ease my mind so I can relax and keep the BP under control. Baby's heartbeat was string at 140 today so that's a good sign
