Intro // Genetic Testing Question

Hi May Bumpies, I'm new! I've been stalking the board for a few weeks now and have gained a ton of great advice along the way. So thanks! I now have a question of my own, but first... a little about me:

I'm 32 and pregnant with my second baby. I'm due on May 23rd, yay for a summer maternity leave! My daughter is 2, a wild ball of fun and has a head full of curly red hair. She makes our lives brighter and better every day. My husband and I have been together for 12 years, married for 5 of those, and we live in Iowa. I'm an art director at an advertising agency. And I love 80's & 90's hip hop, I have an obsession with vanilla chai tea, and I spend my free time wandering the aisles of Target. #basic, I know.

And now for my question... my pregnancy has been a joy so far. No major complaints, sickness or anything! However, I opted to do genetic testing during the first trimester, just as a precaution due to my age. Well last week, the doctor called with my results and said my risk ratio for having a baby with Down Syndrome is 1:160. Normally for my age, this should be around 1:470, so mine is a bit more concerning than he would have hoped. I had two options for more tests: an amnio or a non-invasive blood test. So I went for the blood test last Monday. And my results don't come back for another week or so. With Christmas coming up, they could be delayed even longer. The waiting game is absolutely horrible. Every day I carry around a mix of emotions, stress and worry.

But regardless of the outcome, my pregnancy won't change much. Having a child with DS would definitely be a new challenge but I'm not afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone. I just want to know the results of the test, so I can be prepared for whatever. I'm trying to stay hopeful for the news that my baby does not have DS... I believe 1:160 are still pretty good odds. This unknown darkness is just a scary place to be right now.

Has anybody else been in my shoes? And if so, how did you deal with this down time of waiting for an answer? I'm definitely busy thanks to my job, my daughter and prepping for the holiday, but this wait is painful. Any tips or tricks to not go insane would be appreciated!

Re: Intro // Genetic Testing Question

  • Hi and welcome!
I'm actually waiting on my blood test results that I just took last Monday. I'm 17.3, I did the test twice before and they both came back with too little fetal DNA to get results (I probably did it too early) Anyway, I'm 39 so because I'm older I'm a bit higher risk. While I have no results yet, I get the waiting.. It makes me so anxious!
I do know that you have a 159/160 chance of your baby *not* having DS. When you look at it like that, it's much better odds. I wouldn't worry too much, as that test is not diagnostic and only assesses risk..
Sending good vibes that baby is ok!
I wish I had advice to help with the waiting... It's hard. I'm doing it for the 3rd time now.

  • I know waiting is the hardest part, hoping you get good news soon. It's easy for people to tell you not to worry, but as a mother it's hard not to.
  • Welcome!  I bet that is terribly stressful.  Those odds are still not bad but I can understand being upset.  I will be 37 shortly after this baby comes so I decided to have the Harmony DNA test.  My results only took about a week but it was hard waiting.  I'm sure everything will be okay and you be so relieved when you hear the results.  GL to you!
  • I had a bad experience with my nuchal translucency thickness scan. I'll spare the story about the overzealous sonographer and the slightly careless doctor (I am very unhappy with my OB office), but basically they had me convinced the baby had DS. We sent out the Maternit21 blood work and everything came back fine. However, it took way longer to get back than advertised. It took about 3 weeks to get back and waiting was terrible. My only advice is to focus on how regardless of the result, it won't change your pregnancy and you will have beautiful baby in May.
