Books for First Time Dads

Hey ladies!

Do you have any good book recommendations for first time dads? Most books focus too much on after the birth, but we need more on all that happens leading up to the big day.

Thanks!:)

Re: Books for First Time Dads

  • DH hasn't actually read it yet, but I liked "Dude, You're gonna be a Dad" when I thumbed through it. It has cliff notes for each chapter, so it can be a quick browse.

  • I second "Dude, You're Gonna be a Dad." My hubby is reading it and has found it super handy and very user friendly! We found it at Barnes and Noble :)
  • Thanks! That sounds cute! Will have to check it out for sure.
  • I don't know what book it was, but my coworker bought one for her hubby - and one day when he was reading it he found a section that said there was scientific evidence that suggests that swallowing semen helps alleviate morning sickness. So if your wife is feeling ill, you should "help her out" by asking for a BJ. She took the book away and hid it because obviously it's full of crap.
So, even though I'm completely unhelpful because I can't remember the name of it, DO NOT get your hubby that one.
  • @Lyette1206 lol. What the...? Oh my.

@meggyme my DH and I read 'Dude you're going to be a dad.' I think I liked it more than he did though, he wanted something more serious and a little less of the your wife's gonna be cray cray(to be fair I hadn't had many hormonal moments yet when he read it ;) ) I think there was another thread with a really good suggestion but I ant remember what it was. I'm hoping someone will post cause if I see I want to get it for him.
  • I bought my DH "The expectant father, the ultimate guide for dads to be" I've heard good things about it from my friends husband so I'm putting it in his stocking!

I also got my husband this book, the guy is a little weird who writes it,(like mentioning the dad to be should ask the dr if he can look at his partners cervix during one of the exams- what!!). But, it has a lot of good accurate information.

  • @huskypuppy14 haha! My DH would be like ummm no... I did have some hesitations about giving him a book I hadn't read but I trust my friends husband (due with their first any day now!!) so hoping it's good for him!

  • One of my husbands co workers recommended the birth partner to him.
  • Ditto The Expectant Father... I chose it for my hubs because on skimming it I saw that it had lots of stuff on the importance of taking care of your pregnant partner :). My husband read it cover to cover and was definitely a fan.
  • We got The Expectant Father as well. DH has really enjoyed it despite not being a big reader.
  • Just for reassurance, my husband didn't read any books/I never asked him to, and he is hands down the best father I've ever seen. I think once the baby comes, it's just natural. He's never been one to hold or care for other people's babies but the second my son was born he was hands on and knew just what to do. I'm in awe of how amazing he is with our son still after 1 1/2 years. Even other people are amazed with how patient, hands on and willing to do his share of parenting he is. If you've truly found a good man (which I'm assuming you have!) they'll be perfect
  • @alysemciver my husband is similar. I bought the book and put it in our bathroom in hopes he might read it while on the toilet (sorry if TMI) but it's gathering dust. As things progress I might email him shorter blog posts/articles/videos on specific topics. He tends to read more of those if he has a spare minute. He just doesn't have the attention span or motivation to pick up a book and read it front to back.

Oh definitely! If I see a good article that I think he'd benefit from I send it to him and he has no problem reading it. I sent him and my mom info on car seat safety and danger of winter coats while in car seats because it was important.

This is how I feel too. My husband is so worried because he says he has little experience with babies, but I keep telling him once you have your baby you will be fine :) I also send him short links like a PP mentioned , mostly of dangerous stuff.

I wouldn't mind finding an informational but funny book for him, though.
