Bad gas pains on Nutramegin?

I am at a total loss. DS has silent reflux and has been on prevacid and nutramegin for over 3 weeks now.  I feel like since we made the formula switch he is so uncomfortable.  Almost all day long he is fussy and uncomfortable, always looking like he's trying to pass gas.  I can always feel/hear his stomach rumbling, but don't feel him passing gas like i used to.  I feel like all I do all day is try and comfort and soothe him, he is barely napping during the day.  I do bicycle legs, massage his belly, gas drops, gripe water- I have tried it all. I've switched bottles twice, we've tried tommie tippie, dr browns and nuk- none of which have made a difference.
Anyone have this experience? I don't know whether to try another formula or what.  I am so tired and hate to see him so uncomfortable still.

Re: Bad gas pains on Nutramegin?

  • My DS has been the same way! We use Zantac, gassy formula, gas drops, and the Dr brown bottles. He seems to be a happy camper for a day then he gets constipated and is miserable for a few days until he poops again. Pedi finally said to go ahead and give 1-2 ounces of prune juice a day to keep him regular but it still has been 2 days since he has pooped. I feel terrible for the little guy. Meanwhile his twin sister continues to have the biggest blowouts I've ever seen!

I had the same problem. My DS has had quite a change for good with feedings taking 3 burp breaks, Gerber colic drops, gripe water every other feeding, and a gas stomach compression band from Walmart. Also when they are struggling to pass gas lift their legs like changing a diaper and move them around side to side and circular motion, that always makes my DS able to go the bathroom. I also had to switch to similac and that settled better for him. Good luck!!!
  • DS is on nutramigen and Zantac. We had a few really gassy days until I realized that he was a gulper when the acid comes back up. I have to burp him constantly , at least 3 times per bottle....that along with mylicon drops and dr brown bottles.
I have heard similac has a formula similar to nutramigen that might work better
Best of luck ! Reflux and gas are hell !!!
  • Google baby colic massage, i swear it worked wonders for my son, now at 3.5 months he seems to have outgrown it. Also, as much as its hated, on 2 different peds have recommended i add 1 Tbsp of BEECHNUT rice cereal to his later bottles. Beechnut is a fine powder cereal, unlike Gerber flakes and others, so its not as thick as others, but it coats the tummy just enough to give them some relief.

  • Darn it i just read that you've tried the massage, sorry, it really worked for me.
  • My doctor recommended Similac Alimentum, my son wouldn't eat it, it smells awful probably tastes bad too, but both of my peds prefer it to Nutramigen.
  • We tried Similac Alimentum first & it didn't work for us. Nutramigen is working wonders! We have reflux meds too. You could ask ped to try Similac.

    How old?

  • My niece was on Nutramigen and it was the worst thing for her.  She had a suspected dairy allergy, but her doctor refused to test her because she wasn't failure to thrive and said Nutramigen was the best thing.  She then had bloody stool, would  scream until she could pass gas or poop, and her poop coming out was hard as a rock.  Even still her doctor wouldn't give her the prescription dairy free formula.  My sister in law wound up using Similac Alimentum and switching to almond milk around 10 months because dairy was so horrible for her.
  • @wbwells how was your niece on Similac?
