People STARING at your belly?

Does anyone else have issues with total strangers staring at you? More specifically, at your huge belly? And when I say stare, I mean like GAWKING, not trying to hide it at all. I just don't get it. Trying to walk through the grocery store I have maybe 4 different people stare at me with their mouths open. One lady even turned completely around to watch me walk past. Like have you never seen a pregnant lady before?? People are so RUDE!

Re: People STARING at your belly?

  • This happened to me at the grocery store tonight lol. One of the workers there unintentionally would talk looking at my belly instead of, you know, my face whenever he would respond to me. Lol

  • Just stare back. They probably don't realize they're even doing it (kind of like little kids not knowing any better) and once they realize that you're awkwardly staring back at them, they should get the hint and look away.
  • People are just amazed by the wonders of pregnancy and love to see a pregnant lady...I don't think they can help but stare!! They probably don't realise they are doing it!
  • Don't take it so seriously, every morning I stare at my belly and think how much bigger I can get in another month. I look enormous
  • I forget what it feels like to not get gawked at- and to not have random people start "well meaning" but really annoying conversations with you. (And be comfortable) like I realllly don't remember, it feels like another lifetime. I'm looking forward to being unnoticed again soon.
  • People at work, including women, who haven't said anything to me about my pregnancy stare at my belly. It's the most annoying thing.
  • I don't have a mirror in the house that goes below the neck so whenever I see myself while I'm out I stare too! It doesn't really bother me that people stare, I haven't had any intentionally negative comments or anything, people just find it fascinating I guess.
  • I'm just about 38 weeks and super uncomfortable. I saw some kids laughing at me at the mall when I was Christmas shopping
  • Laughing is kids being jerks. But the general staring is probably just the awe at the miracle of pregnancy. My dad does this to EVERY pregnant lady. He just thinks pregnancy is the absolute neatest, most beautiful thing

I haven't really noticed the stares...
The other day, I walked past someone I went to elementary school with ( I remembered her face, don't think she remembered me, so I didn't wave)
I noticed her mom look and smile at my belly, but that's it..
About a month ago before I really "popped" out I went to a grocery store and the cashier was trying to make small talk about the baby...

    Let 'em look...
Maybe their Jedi mind powers (in light of the new Star Wars movie *eye roll*) will make our waters break :P
  • The only stares I seem to really notice seem to be from older women (not old, but say 50s) and they usually get this sweet smile on their face. I think it makes them think of when they were pregnant. Doesn't really bother me, just makes me kind of happy in a strange way.

  • I usually have petite asian women look at me because i am naturally tall and skinny and apart from the bump and boobs, thats the only giveaway i'm pregnant... I get the look like they can't believe my bump is tinier compared to theirs because of my large torso.

The only thing i hate is if i don't know you and we aren't besties, don't start rubbin my belly without asking first.. Its rude and we aint family... Only baby's daddy and auntys can do that... Because i get along with them fine
  • ^ nope, only baby daddy is allowed to rub my belly. I death glared my mom when she tried..... It's awkward I also don't like to be touched lol.
  • I had to pick up a six pack of beer from the store last night for DH and I've never gotten so many belly stares in my life! It was like "Calm down, people. I am still allowed to BUY alcohol."
  • Or you could have a lady act like she doesn't see your enormous belly so she can butt in front of you in line at Target guilt free, pretending she didn't just cut off a hugely pregnant women with her arms full trying to keep a four year old from wandering off...either way people can really suck sometimes.
  • I stare!  I've always been amazed by pregnant bellies!  I'm amazed at my own and that there is a tiny human in there.  I stare even more at other women now that I have this huge belly.

I agree, I feel like every woman who is obviously a Mom of adult children stares with this look of longing, remembering their golden days, perhaps wondering when they'll get some grandchildren lol

I generally cannot stand to be touched, and have surprised myself by obliging everyone who has asked to touch my stomach. I am cringing internally the whole time, but for some reason I always say yes???

As for belly stares, I really haven't noticed! I figure this is because I look unfriendly, and am always moving around with a very clear direction. I avoid small talk at all costs, so I think it comes across to those around me and I get left alone.

  • it happened to me too! at a liquor store (buying a Christmas present) so i expected it. i actually kinda smiled when people looked.
  • Ya I had people stare at me at the liquor store while buying gifts. I got some dirty stares. But come on people Im not buying a 60 of whiskey and 6 bottles of wine for myself to drink (given not pregnant Id accept the whiskey with open arms). But if one more person touches my belly I'll snap. Was at my MIL family xmas last night and it was constant.
  • I'm so over the belly touching too! I didn't really mind (except from strangers cause that's weird) but like now I'm getting cranky. And also I just realized that people probably stare at me because I look like I'm about 17 on an average day when I'm not made up or anything. So that combined with the liquor store was a lot of fun.
  • @scornwell717 I totally feel ya! With my first I was 28 turning 29yrs old and I had customers come in and give me dirty looks. One guy even yelled at me and said I was too young to have a baby. I said "I'm almost 30! How much longer should I wait?!" And he kind of laughed and said "Sorry, I thought you were in high school."
Geeze! I did thank him for the compliment though.
  • @ShannyFann what the hell! He shouldn't have said anything even if you WERE the age he thought you were! Mind your own f*cking business, people! Definitely a nice compliment though ;)

I need to practice my resting bitch face- because I'm sick of having to talk about my pregnancy with strangers- I know they're being friendly, but I'm not interested in discussing it with people I don't know!!!

Edit to add: except maybe on here!! Lmao!
