Metformin

I have PCOS and took metformin for a year before getting pregnant. I'm sure it was a big reason why I got pregnant. Anyway I'm past 12 weeks now and still taking it but my dr said I could stop. Did anyone else stop at 12 wks and how are you doing? I'm reluctant to stop but I only have a couple weeks of it left so it's going to happen soon.

Re: Metformin

  • I started Metformin barely a month before I got pregnant & was also told around 11wks that I could stop taking it (or continue, it was up to me.) I decided to continue taking it at least for now because of how it affected my weight. It was prescribed to me because I have PCOS with insulin resistance. I'm terrified of going off it & gaining too much unnecessary weight which could create complications. I just want a happy, healthy baby. I can't say I'll stay on it my entire pregnancy, but for now I continue to take it along with my other supplements.

  • That's interesting @JennN7722! I've heard it's fine to take longer. I didn't take it with my first two pregnancies and although I never even tested borderline for GD, I had huge babies (10.7 and 9.5). Like I said I've been on met for a year but it didn't do one thing to help me lose weight sadly. It regulated my cycle for the middle six months (it took a couple months to start working then the couple months before I got pregnant they were starting to get irregular again). So me taking it is purely because I don't want to miscarry.

Oh wow, big babies! I say if you are comfortable taking it and you don't have a medical proffessonal telling you you MUST stop taking it, the peace of mind it creates is totally worth it! I know I stressed at the thought of stopping. And as soon as I spoke with another doctor in the group & decided to stay on it for now I felt soooo much better! I'm at 16 weeks now & looking forward to my 20wk scan to see how the baby is growing.
  • I have PCOS and was taking it. I stopped as soon as I started throwing up because I hate it. Dr was fine with that.

  • My doctor advised I stop taking it at 12 weeks. I was scared that I would start to feel my blood sugar drop more frequently when I stopped taking it, but surprisingly I feel okay. My doctor doesn't understand the whole metformin-PCOS thing and wanted me to test my blood sugar at home but I haven't. I think he will revisit it after I do the insulin resistance test.

  • I have PCOS, have been in Metformin, and loved how I felt. I didn't get pregnant while on it, but was trying. My doctor had told me that if I got pregnant, I'd be taking it the whole time.
  • I was diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor recommended a low GI diet and exercise. I started taking Metformin a year ago because I do have insulin resistance. Diabetes runs in my family. Metformin helped regulate my cycle, and possibly helped with ovulation. My OB said I could take Metformin through the first trimester. However, she said once the heartbeat is confirmed, then really Metformin is not necessary. Unfortunately, those with PCOS have a higher chance of miscarriage. Her rationale was once you hear a heartbeat, the chance of miscarriage is greatly reduced. I stopped around week 7. I believe it is a category B drug, and evidence is supporting Metformin during pregnancy.

  • I took metformin briefly 10 yrs ago, but didn't react well and went off it pretty quickly. I have PCOS w/out insulin resistance. I can't add to the discussion of metformin in pregnancy, I just wanted to say it's nice to see other pregnant PCOS ladies. Congrats all!
  • I have pregestational diabetes and have been on metformin for years. My OB took me off of it as soon as I became pregnant but MFM put me back on at about 12 weeks due to insulin resistance.
