pre term labor?

So I had my 36 week visit yesterday and I am 3cm dilated and cervix is 80 % thinned and she is heads down in position -1 station. Question for women who have giveb birth before- is labor soon or do I have time? Dr wouldn't speculate. This is my first so I have no idea. I know baby will come when she's ready etc. .. just want other mother's opinion based on their experience.

Re: pre term labor?

  • Your doctor wouldn't speculate because it is really impossible to say. You could have your baby tomorrow, or it could be 4 weeks from now. Your body is getting ready though!

  • It's anybody's guess on when it will happen.  My doctor doesn't consider 36 weeks to be pre-term, though.  In fact, I hit 34 weeks this week and she was so happy that she can "stop worrying about me" going into labor too soon.  For my physician, 34 weeks is the magic milestone after which she won't stop labor if it happens.  But, every physician may have a different opinion on that.  I wouldn't worry about 36 weeks being too soon, if I were you.

  • @JoJoMama730 my doctor won't stop labor after 34 weeks either! That made me so nervous!! I didn't want to do anything that could potentially put me into labor
  • Did you do anything special that you think helped you dialate? I went to my appt Monday and my Doc said my cervix is completely closed and im 36 wks as well. I know every woman is different but I would love some advice
  • 3 cm is awesome! But, it truly means nothing. You can continue to be 3cm for 5 more weeks. Or - you could be 5cm in 2 weeks and have a baby.  Try not to think about it too much. Did your Dr. say why he preformed a cervical check at 36 weeks?
  • How dialated do you have to be before they admit you into the hospital? When is it decided that baby is actually coming?

I was wondering the same thing, like if you're 5 cm dilated but aren't having any contractions what does that mean?
  • My experience was that they are more concerned about contractions. Regular, strong contractioms or your water breaks. I was only 3cm whem they admitted me but i had 3 minute contractions and my water had broken.

They will usually admit you if you are 4 cm AND having regular contractions. You can be 4 cm and not in labor in which case they won't admit you. They will also admit you if your water has broken regardless of how dilated you are.
  • @jeanbug12 thank you so much!! @scornwell717 here's our answer!

It means nothing. There's a term in the birth community. "Walking ___". A walking 5 cm is an awesome thing. It means your halfway there. I'd love to be a walking 5cm.
  • Contractions mean labor, it's really got nothing to do with how dilated you may already be.
  • To OP, there's no telling which is why your dr didn't speculate. But obviously you're hoping to hear others experience, so here's mine. My dr starts routine cervical checks at 36 week visits. Last pregnancy as a FTM, I had similar dilation/effacement and delivered about 2 weeks later.

To others question, unless I'm in active labor or have broken water my dr doesn't admit until 6 cm dilation. At that point she'll break water to induce bc of the concern of a quick labor/not making it to the hospital on time.
  • With my second, I was admitted at 5 cm dilation with regular contractions and I had the baby four hours later.

My doctor also starts regular cervical checks at 36 weeks. I was googling to find out the medical reason for cervical checks last night and couldn't find any information that looked legitimate.
  • I was 3 at 36 w/ DD and was induced so I really think it could or could not mean anything! lol  The good news is that when I was induced, I got the epi before we started the induction so that was good.

  • Because of my amniotic fluid being high and I only have a 2 vessel umbilical cord. They said they would check at every appt from now until I delivered
  • Hey guys, we are trying to get a sticky for the following thread so we can all learn and share what's happening together.

  • @MeghaJake mine said she does a cervical check at 38 weeks not because it is anypredictor of timing, but only because when I actually go into labor it will let her know how much progress I actually make given where I started from before labor (ie I'm if in labor and they check me and I'm 6cm, if I was 5cm at my pre-labor visit, I haven't made much progress).
  • I've been getting cervical checks for months now, but I was at high risk for (really early) preterm labor.  It's really no big deal to get them.  If I had started dilating before 34 weeks, my doc would have known to put me on meds to try to stop it from progressing.  Maybe the cervical checks that most start getting at 36 weeks is just to keep a close eye on your progress?

  • I agree with Other ladies. You could have your baby tomorrow or you could go to 42 weeks before you have your baby. Dilation on its own typically doesn't mean much as to when labor will come. Maybe when labor does come it will go faster though since you're already dilated a little? Idk

With my first I never had a cervical check until I went to the hospital with contractions at 3minutes apart. Like, hard, hold your stomach, can't walk, take your breath contractions. I was 39w5d. I was dilated to 4cm, my water had not broke, and I had my daughter 11hrs later.
Now I am 37w2d, I've lost pieces of my plug, I am dilated to 1cm and cervix is high and hard. I was only checked this time because I went to my OB with contractions 3minutes apart and becoming stronger. Thought with how last time went it may be smart to go and be checked. Completely Braxton Hicks! Talk about angry momma bear who is done with pregnancy! Haven't had a contraction since except for one today.
My point is, it doesn't matter at all what any one will tell you. Opinions are great, but don't base anything on them. This is pregnancy two and as you can see, two totally different outcomes from the same mommy. Every pregnancy is different. I wish they weren't because then I'd hopefully have DD#2 by now. Hahaha!
