Re: Bottle feeding..help

  • What bottles are you using? I found my LO didnt like any of the wide nippled bottles. I also had to play around with nipple sizes. Right now we use dr browns standard and size 2 nipples.
  • Trial and error. Try different styles and different nipples. I remember with DD1 it took us forever to find a sippy cup she would drink from when we transitioned from the bottle. I'm pretty sure I bought every sippy cup on the market til we found one she likes. My point is, they're all different and you may need to experiment until you find a bottle she likes.

  • I highly recommend Minbie bottles. I use the extra slow and slow teats. They recreate the same movement/sensation as breastfeeding. I am able to transition back and forth from breast to bottle without any issues.
  • We are having a hard time introducing the bottle. We've tried a bunch of them and she is not having it. Hopefully we figure it out soon. We just keep practicing.
  • Hey ladies! I had this same problem and finally went to see a speech language pathologist that specialized in bottle feeding. The bottle made no difference - the issue was that she was struggling to coordinate her suck, swallow, breathe on the bottle. I have an oversupply so my boob was doing all the work and she was just chilling with me, but never learned how to work for it so the bottle was very frustrating to her at first! She also has a horrible gag reflex because she wasn't used to having anything go so far into her mouth (obviously real nipples aren't as long as bottle nipples lol)! We were told to get a soothie pacifier and do oral play - essentially deactivate her gag reflux by desensitizing her tongue with the pacifier first. We also had to do deep knee bends while holding her. Apparently the movement calms baby and helps her organize her suck, swallow, breathe. We used the medela breastmilk even storage bottles - they're really skinny and hold 2.5 ounces. The goal was to get her to take an ounce in 10 minutes and not to continue to let her be frustrated or force it. The other thing was we had to pinch her cheeks the first few times to help her with get the suction she needed. It was a lot to do all at once (the skinny bottles helped us be able to pinch her cheeks while feeding her). BUT she learned over the weekend and by Monday at daycare she had no issues!!! Now anyone can feed her a bottle :) please let me know if you have any questions, I know how heartbreaking it is to think baby won't eat without you!!!
  • Having this same issue and it's stressing me out!! I have to return to work in two weeks and DD just started refusing bottle. At 4 weeks we introduced pumped milk in bottle and she took to it like a champ. We would give her a bottle a few times a week with no issues and then all of a sudden about 9 weeks (she's 10 weeks now) she started refusing the bottle. She will even start to cry if she sees it.
We have tried different bottles, different people, different positions and nothing seems to help.
I've spoken to LC and they advice to just keep trying. It's so frustrating bc we specifically introduced bottle at 4 weeks so we could avoid this and now the clock is ticking to go back to work.
seems like its a common problem- Google "bottle strike"
I look forward to everyone's tips!
  • Thanks for sharing! Did your LO always refuse bottle or did they take it at first and then refuse?
  • I own like 12 types of bottles. She likes the breast flow bottle. My sister's son never took a bottle and when she went back to work at 12 weeks he took pumped milk out of a special cup. It had a weird reservoir in it to keep the flow slow for tiny babies.
  • I read to let someone else feed her the bottle.  She can smell you and she prefers it rather than a bottle so it might be harder for her to take a bottle from you.  Once she takes it from other people she learns that food comes in different packages and from different people.

  • Have you tried leaving for an extended period of time? A friend of mine said he would refuse the bottle for 4 hours every single time... And then give in.
  • Went to see a LC about our problem and was told as long as we can rule out thrush (bottles can hurt more than breast with thrush) that basically we just have to keep trying. She says we give in too quickly and nurse baby and she's learning she will get what she wants if she holds out long enough. so here I am hiding in another room listening to DH trying to give her bottle and she's crying her eyes out. I'll let you know if we have any success or if I cave in and nurse her.
  • Try the lansinoh momma bottle! My son refused every bottle we gave him for weeks. We finally tried this one after a recommendation from their past experience. My son latched on right away and we haven't had a problem since!
  • I m using timmi toppe bottle ..slow feed0+.. she does take it only when she is sleepy so i put it into her mouth quickly before she realise it that it is something else.but its very hard to deal with her when she is awake
  • I second the Lansinoh momma bottle. It's the only kind my boy can take. But it took us a bunch of different bottles before we found one that worked.
  • I have ordered lansinoh bottle... let see ..finger crossed
  • We started practicing syringe feeding. She is flat out refusing all bottles we've tried. I think we need to practice her sucking. We've tried pacifiers and they make her throw up. I go back to work in a week. I'm so anxious about leaving her. I didn't want to before and now I'm nervous she won't eat and she'll scream all day.

This is our situation too. She always gags and sometimes pukes from pacifiers. She also doesn't really suck on pacifiers but kind of chews on them. We've had no success with a bottle. I'm so worried about her starving when I go back to work.

It's so disheartening. I'm so anxious about. I wouldn't wish this on anyone! I just played with her with a few of the bottles we got. She mostly pushed all the milk out, but didn't scream. I've been trying to play with the pacifiers too. I just read to let her suck them in and that seems to help a little with the gagging. I have a week... I hope she can at least take a little at daycare.

Eta: good luck. I hope you find something that works for you all.
  • Baby was on bottle strike for 3 weeks. She would scream anytime she even saw bottle. After lots of research I visited a LC. They said baby won't starve that at this age they develop preferences and if she thinks she can get breast she will hold out. So my husband tried. Took her to another room where I was no where in sight for two hours he tried to give it to her then she would cry then he would soothe her and try again. Finally she took it! We were so happy! It was 4 hours after the last time she ate (normally she eats every 2 hours) so I think she was hungry enough to give in. Then the next day she took a bottle without any protests! We haven't had any trouble since. I hope you are able to work it out. I know how stressful it is when you have to go back to work and are worried baby will starve. Hang in there!!
