Due date question

Do you count your due date as the first day of your LMP or do you use the date they give you on the ultrasound?

  • What does your Dr go by? I have seen them do either or, depending on the results.

  • Use whatever your doctor tells you. Usually it's ultrasound.
  • Ask your doctor - mine uses LMP but will adjust to the ultrasound if it differs by more than 1 week from LMP.

  • I, and my current OB, use LMP. If the US showed a significant discrepancy, more than a day or two, I assume my OB would adjust accordingly.

Interestingly, I charted with #1 so I knew exactly what day I ovulated and knew what my due date would be based on that (same as the due date based on LMP). My OB at that time ended up changing my due date part way through my pregnancy based on an U/S and picked a date two days earlier than what my LMP and charting showed. DS ended up being born on my original due date... U/S dating is not a perfect science (just like due dates based on LMP/charting!).

    DS: EDD, December 19th, 2014. Born, December 19th, 2014!
    DD: EDD, July 18th, 2016. Born, July 19th, 2016!

  • I charted and my due date is still different than what I thought. My babes are late on the whole implantation thing. So, because it's my second pregnancy and the u/s was showing 6 days behind, they adjusted my due date. I go by what the doctor says because they'll be monitoring you according to that date.

  • Mine uses LMP unless the ultrasound is off from it by 5 or more days.
  • My dr went with LMP even though ultrasound was a bit off. I know from charting that it is most likely 3-4 days off. I will go by what the DR told me and just know for myself that it is probably 4 days ahead.

Your due date is actually just an average--you actually get two weeks on either side as the normal range. It would really only make a difference with something like a premature birth or interventions.

As for the pp who said the baby was born on the one due date and not another with 2 days difference... Yeah that doesn't really prove that one method is more reliable because babies come when they want, not based on a calendar: usually within 2 weeks of the due date, but surprisingly rarely on that exact day.

  • Thanks guys, it's just a technicality on my end (1 day difference) but wondering what to tell people when they ask. I also like reading about the baby's size (fruit analogy) when I gain a week... :)
  • For now we are going off my o date but will use our 10 w u/s in Jan to confirm. I ovulated late so it is a difference of about a week than my LMP.
  • Mine were off by a lot. I made up a date in the middle so I didn't have to "repeat" any of first trimester and I'll just tell people "mid-July." Yeah, I know it doesn't really work like that, but it made me feel better for now. I'll probably adjust again when I go back for my next u/s first week in Jan. Like PPs said, babies come when they want so no reason to be particular about one day over the other if they're close.
  • Mine was the same this time around, but last time with DD I went with the ultrasound date, as that's what my doctor did.
  • I went by my ultrasound as it put me a week behind and with irregular periods I knew my lmp wasn't as reliable as some ladies is.

  • At my ultrasound I was 12w0d by LMP. Ultrasound said 11w3d. OB said not enough to change my due date. DD measured "behind" the whole pregnancy. OB said I might just have smaller babies or ones that implant later.
  • Mine goes by LMP unless there's a big discrepancy. However, at my office they used a wheel to calculate my due date and it's 1 day off from what it should be since 2016 is a leap year.

  • Since I had a loss I really hope they choose to go off the u/s and my ovulation date.  They coincided at my 7w u/s and so we will see at the 10w one.  I just don't need the anxiety of thinking my baby is measuring small when really my due date is inaccurately ahead and my baby is fine.  My difference between the O date and LMP is five days.
