No heartbeat

Since I've moved back home a week ago, I just had my first apt here. I've seen the heartbeat before thru visual ultrasound, I didn't get one here. I got one that hears it, but the doc said it was normal that it doesn't pick up this week beings I'm nine weeks. I just don't understand how I've seen it before, but not now. Different technology? Ugh

Seeing the heartbeat through U/S and hearing it through Doppler are two different things. The U/S is WAY more sensitive than the Doppler, and the Doppler will not usually pick up the heartbeat to be heard until after 10 weeks. I wouldn't worry.

Are you talking about the Doppler? If so it's totally normal not to hear it at the doctors office. We saw the heartbeat at 6 weeks on the ultrasound then at 11 weeks the doctor couldn't hear it on the Doppler in the office. Now at 12 weeks we had an ultrasound and saw the heartbeat and watched it jump around like crazy. Most people don't hear it at the doctors until 2nd trimester so don't worry!

If you're talking about hearing it from the doppler, my MW actually recommend not doing this early on and waiting because of this specifically - if they can't find it people get nervous and upset. When it is completely normal to not be able to hear it early on.
We are going tomorrow for our first prenatal appt and are choosing to wait till we do out 12 wk u/s because of this

I had a doppler scan yesterday and they couldn't find the heartbeat either. My doctor was reluctant to even do it because she said it's very uncommon to hear it at this point. The ultrasound machines are much more sensitive and even with those, it's more common to see the little flutter rather than hear it.

She actually recommends that people wait until 10w to get a doppler, but I wanted to try since DH had taken the day off for our appointment. I consider this like taking a pregnancy test at 8dpo and getting a BFN...it's not a NO, it's a NOT YET

There's so much to come that is out of our control. If your provider is worried, she or he will send you for further testing. No need to worry until there's a need to!

I was 10w4d and my doctor gave me a 1/4 chance of not being able to find the heartbeat with a Doppler and asked if I was okay with her trying or if I preferred she wait and not stress me out if it wasn't findable. It took a solid 2 minutes of searching to find it. I wouldn't stress about not being able to find it at 9 weeks after that experience.

Your doctor told you it was normal. Trust them, because it is, especially that early! I don't think they were reliably able to pick up my LOs heartbeat with the doppler until third trimester because of how my uterus was positioned.

Thanks everybody! I ended up calling a different nurse and getting a second opinion to ease my mind. I'm going to get a new doctor, she seemed more than happy to do the Doppler this early on and even said I need to go back in two weeks rather than four to try again and if not then to get ultrasound. She was not very supportive or trekking much info no matter the questions I've asked. Thank you ladies

I'm confused. Why would you want to do the Doppler earlier on knowing there might be a chance you won't hear anything, and you will freak yourself out all over again? Your current doctor is doing everything right, as far as I can tell.

we don't attempt using a Doppler on patients under 12 weeks. If they are obese sometimes it's even later.
You Doctor is correct. The chances of not getting tones yet is very high at 9 weeks.

I had a doppler at 9 weeks; the midwife said there was a 50/50 chance we'd hear a heartbeat but not to get my hopes up about it. She also said, it doesn't mean anything if we don't hear the heartbeat it's just really early. I got lucky! Took her a while, but there it was! Hang in there. Everyone seems to have a wide range of experiences. I am actually not due for a US until the end of Feb (22 weeks) and they won't be doing one before then.

I'm sorry this made you nervous, but some people actually do find out they have a loss through losing/never seeing the heartbeat and the title of your thread is misleading as to what the situation actually is. I also don't see the need for a second opinion. It's just too early, and it isn't recommended to go overboard with the ultrasounds.
