Random. Braces while pregnant anyone?

Hi, so I need braces put on my top teeth for 6 months which would put getting them off right about the time I'm due. I go back and fourth on this because I know it may cause me to feel really insecure with a big belly and adult braces. But I think how much harder it will be to make appointments with a newborn and it would be nice to be done. I also heard gums can be more sensitive while pregnant and that makes me worry a bit. Thanks for listening to me ramble anybody wore braces while pregnanct or just have any thoughts? I've never had them. Thanks ladies

Re: Random. Braces while pregnant anyone?

  • I haven't worn them while pregnant but lots of adults wear braces today. People will notice you have them but no one will care. Gums may be more sensitive but I doubt they'll be too much worse than normal.

I agree with you! Far better to get it out of the way now. And you're absolutely right, once you have your baby you're not going to want to deal with braces or appointments.

  • @Boonhilde, thank you. My mom made me feel crazy for doing this while pregnant but I feel like I'm knocking out two birds with one stone. I just may go into hiding the next 6 months lol.

  • I had them while I was pregnant with my first and it was no big deal. It didnt feel any different (sensitivity wise) as to when I had them when I was a teenager. Id say go for it, better be done with that before baby gets here than having to deal with extra appointments and a newborn.
  • I wouldn't do it, just for the fact that your body does weird things while pregnant! My teeth shifted during my last pregnancy and I will probably need braces on the top for a few months down the road, but I wanted to wait until I was done having kids.
  • My mom had them while she was pregnant with me (a looooong time ago... during the Carter administration...), and while I think she was a little self-conscious about it at the time, she never regretted it. Not going to lie, photos of her during that time are amusing. But orthodontia has made a lot of progress since then, too. I say go for it.

  • Definitely think you should go ahead and get it done. Then when the baby is born, you will have your lovely baby and a great smile for all your pics!
  • Oh and although this might be an UO, for me pregnancy is such an unglamorous time with spots, fatty bits, sickness etc. I doubt braces would make me feel any different!
  • That's kinda how I feel getting huge bad skin might as well top it off with akward adult braces haha. Thanks ladies guess I'll keep my appointment for the week after Christmas this is gonna suck!

  • I have no idea the cost difference or anything, but have you looked into invisiline? My dh's cousin recently used that and I didn't even realize it for months, even though I see him every week. For all I know, it could be 400 times the cost, though, or harder to be covered by insurance.
  • Go for it! I did ortho when I was 25, but I don't regret it at all. Is Invisalign an option?

  • I was wondering the same as PP, is invisalign an option?  If you only need them for a total of 6 months then it should be.  I would do it if I were you.  I had 9 years of braces.  5 as a teenager and then another 4 as an adult.  It's really not horrible.

I've been doing Invisalign since shortly before getting pregnant it has worked great. But I only needed to move one tooth so I could get by without having the metal braces. If you have to have metal I say just go for it, 6 months will fly by and then you'll be done. My only reservation would be any maternity pictures you want taken. Not sure I'd want my braces in those.

    Edit because I can't spell.

  • Invisalign was my first choice of but I'm not a candidate. My teeth are not crooked but are uneven so they need to pull the front left ones down to be even with right side and apparently invisaligns not so good at doing that bummer. They said the teeth would be in place by probably the first month or two but would need to be held in place by braces for 6 months total so they didn't just move back.

  • Go for it. I'd be self conscious but just because I already look 15 ha 6 mos isn't that long

  • I have Invisalign right now and it is not something I would have started while pregnant ... They have to take lots of molds I can only imagine the nausea in addition.

I'd go for it! And if I could start over I would have gotten braces ... There is never a good time for an appliance in your mouth :)
