Growing up, my dad and I would make ginger bread cookies together and take the extras to the hospital ER for the nurses (he was an RN there). We'd go to candlelight service at church and then family dinner. On Christmas Eve, we'd open one present and it was always fun new pajamas and a movie with hot chocolate.
I'm excited to start the pajamas and movie tradition with my daughter this year and Pipsqueak next year. Currently, my husband and I go to MIL's on Christmas Eve to have dinner and watch the niece and nephews open presents.
-Feast of the 7 Fishes on Christmas Eve (Italian)... also make rice balls (fried with mozzarella inside, mmmm!) -Cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. -DH is a basketball coach. We have his position players over for dinner and to paint X-mas ornaments. He has them draw names so they make them for someone else. He participates as well, so our Christmas tree has ornaments from past players on it. It's a nice tradition.
I bake tons of cookies with my mom every year. On Christmas Eve we all bring hors d'oeuvres and then have a simple dinner (something like French onion soup, salad, and fresh bread). Then we open one present, which is always new PJs and a book. We usually watch a Christmas movie that night.
On Christmas morning we play Handel's Messiah (and other Christmas music), light a fire, and open presents. We always take turns opening presents. Then we sit down for breakfast (usually coffee, orange juice, fruit salad, cinnamon buns and a breakfast casserole). The rest of the day we relax, keep the fire blazing, and help out in the kitchen. Then turkey dinner followed by cookies and mulled wine!
Our baby will be the first in the family so I'm interested to see how things start changing once we start our own traditions at our home.
-On Christmas Eve we go to my uncle's house. They've been having an open house every year since they got married and it's one of our favorite days. This year, we'll be announcing our pregnancy at this night! -The weekend after Christmas we do "stocking day" where we get together and open our stockings together (we don't open them on Christmas morning like most people do). This started with my great grandmother who wanted to take the pressure off of everyone getting together on the day itself because of competing responsibilities (in-laws, work, etc). When it's close to Christmas day like it is this year, it's a great way to use up leftovers! -We also travel to DH's family's house on Long Island the weekend after Christmas to spend time and exchange gifts with his family.
I really love how we're able to see all of the family members every year and still take part in all the traditions. I usually sign up to work on Christmas day and still get to see everyone.
On Christmas Eve we do a Christmas book and a movie. This year, I think we will do gifts from mommy and daddy on Christmas Eve. Christmas morning we do cinnamon rolls and open gifts. My family lives about 4 hours away, so we leave Christmas evening and celebrate the day after. We also travel to celebrate with my dad's side of the family as we are very close. As DD gets older, I would love to add PJ's and driving around looking at Christmas lights to our traditions. I love how we can pick and choose our favorites from when we were growing up and make it work for our little family.
The Saturday before Christmas is spent with my husband's immediate family. We order a bunch of food from a bunch of different places and then play Christmas trivia games that my MIL creates and each correct answer gets $1. It's always a competition who gets the most right answers! Then we open gifts and watch tv (usually the x-mad themed SNL) til were all too tired.
On Christmas Eve we go to my mom's house where her side of the family gathers. We eat pizza and my mom makes TONS of cookies (another tradition is making the cookies themselves!). Then the young kids open the presents from their godparents (there are 11 cousins total so it was too much to buy for everyone). Then we do "grab bag" for the adults which turns into a crazy exchange of gifts. This is when we will be telling my extended family about the pregnancy!
Christmas Day is with my mom and sister and we just veg out, eat and open gifts. We can't wait to be able to celebrate our favorite holiday with the little one!!
We do Christmas Eve with DH's family. Then we come home and curl up in the floor with a fire and the dogs to watch a movie together (generally I vote for the first Harry Potter, then proceed to watch the rest in the week after). On Christmas we go to my parents house with my family. Both days are pretty relaxed.
If we do Christmas with my family, Christmas Eve we make cookies. We eat dinner, go look at Christmas lights, we used to take cookies to the guards on base but they don't allow that anymore. Then we come home and open one gift a piece( probably not adults this year) then we put our pjs on and watch a Christmas movie. Christmas Day we open presents, each person taking a turn. My mom makes breakfast and then we get ready. We are staying at my moms house this year, extended family is coming over. We eat dinner and hang out. We also do a white elephant gift for the adults.
Christmas at my Inlaws is different. Depends where we are and who is there. I like Christmas with my family more. And thanksgiving with DHs family.
