SS- Cruise Tips

So DH and I are going on a cruise in a few weeks.  It will be right at my 6ish week mark which was when I had MS last time.  It was pretty mild so I never had to take anything or take off work, etc.  However, I've also never been on a cruise so I'm not sure if I'll be nauseous naturally...

My question:  Anyone have experience with 1st trimester on a cruise? Tips? Tricks? Safe drugs?

Re: SS- Cruise Tips

  • I don't have any tips, but interested in what others have to say.  We will be taking a cruise in January!

  • My last pregnancy I took a cruise when I was in the first trimester and I brought lots of mints to suck on. I've heard of women that swear by the sea bands but I've never used those. Also, I always felt better when I was by fresh air so we would sleep with the door to the balcony cracked open and spent lots of time on deck. Also....careful in the buffets-the morning buffet has lots of fish and other stinky foods that I could not handle. Hope it goes great for you!
  • I'm going to follow this because I have a cruise scheduled for when I'll be 10 weeks. It's my first pregnancy so I have no idea how I'll be.

Could you talk to your doctor? I have my first appointment a week before and am planning on asking my doctor what she suggests. She may write me a prescription as a just-in-case measure.

Also, check the cruise line's policies. My cruise line (Princess) requires that you inform them of any illness/special conditions including pregnancy. I actually have to have my doctor sign a form saying I'm well enough to travel. Your cruise line may have similar policies in place. Not sure what would happen if you didn't fill out the form, it probably just covers their asses for legal purposes, but you might want to check anyway.

I have my yearly pap on Monday, so I'll ask her then.  Might ask for a Zofran prescription just in case...

I won't be showing so if they require disclosure I'll probably just rebel and not do it...
  • I to am going on a cruise the 1st week of January when I am 7 ish weeks. I did not get MS with my first so I was hoping it would be the same this time...may be a bad plan. I am most worried about keeping up with my 16 month old on the ship when all I will want to do is sleep. I love cruises though so I am still excited for the warmer weather and lack of work.

  • I get very bad seasickness. If we take the boat out and I don't take Dramamine I'm pretty much guaranteed to vomit. That being said, cruise ships are the exception. They are so large that unless you hit a major storm (or are standing in certain spots on the ship sometimes) sea sickness probably won't be an issue. I do remember taking ginger tablets with my last pregnancy before a fishing trip and I've heard great things about the sea band.

  • We took a cruise during my 6-7 week with my first pregnancy and it was pretty easy because of the never closing buffets. I made sure to drink a ton of water, and brought saltines on board with me and would eat one or two every morning I woke up which I swore helped with the morning sickness (someone else gave me that tip).

It was our second cruise together and while the first we did more bars/cocktails/gambling this one was slightly tamer obviously so we made sure to book fun excursions and activities (like shows and a cupcaking making class). Make sure to book that stuff asap because they fill quickly.

Also some of the excursions I had planned on doing I could no longer do when pregnant- things like swimming with dolphins or other water activity excursions. Make sure you ask questions if anything looks like a maybe before booking.

  • I had an inside room on the lowest passenger deck on my first cruise, and it was all nausea all the time.

We had a balcony on the cruise during my first pregnancy, and I was fine. I brought seabands, but didn't need them. I also didn't have much morning sickness with that pregnancy.

  • I went on a cruise when I was 9 weeks pregnant with my son. I did wear the Seabands and I really think they helped. Could have been a placebo effect, I suppose, but I could definitely tell the difference. Saltines and green apples were tricks I read and they both helped settle the stomach. I would stock up at the buffet or ask the room steward. I did wind up telling my table mates as they were very concerned when I ran out of the restaurant covering my mouth on lobster night. The smell of seafood made me so sick!

Just take it easy and get plenty of fluids and rest. And have a great time!

  • Thanks for all the tips! I'm going to try to be over prepared and then hoping I won't need it!
  • Well..I have no advice I'm afraid. I'll should be starting my 2nd trimester on our 7 day cruise we have coming up in Feb.. I'll be soo ready for the buffets but the sad part is not being able to go on excursions. (My hubby and I love adventurous stuff) I hope to hear from you about your experience after your cruise because you will be going before me! :)

  • Ironic is that I did a cruise with my first and was ms from week 7-12 and then went on the cruise and ms ended completely I felt great. Left cruise and another week of ms returned. Some of the things that helped me when I wasn't pregnant was wearing one of those wrist bands.
