Hello all! I will be 16 weeks tomorrow. I have a 14 month old daughter. She was born at 33 weeks 5 days, my water broke at 31 weeks. She also was born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome. Anyways, this time around I am getting progesterone injections weekly. Got my first one today. Does anyone have experience with these??

Is it Progesterone In Oil (PIO)? If so, yes, I had to take them nightly through week 10. It's an intramuscular injection usually in the hip/rump area. Are you giving the shots at home? Best method we've found-- warm the oil vial in a heating pad before drawing and ice the area of your backside prior to injection. I like to lay down on the bed for the shot while my DH injects so I can't squirm away. The needle & fluid usually doesn't hurt doing it this way. Adding a massage with a warm washcloth afterward and then Walking around or lying on a heating pad will prevent you from being sore or having a lump of oil the next day. We had a routine Bc it was every night, but once a week shouldn't be bad. :) again, big needle, but not painful. GL and I hope this helps you have a H&H 9 months!!

  • Everything PP said.  I have been on PIO since week 6.  I have had progesterone problems with all my pregnancies so it was an automatic go to.  I also did them once a day.  I hoping my my doc with tell me to stop at my appointment next.  FX.

Good luck with them.  They aren't too bad!

  • @JonesBaby0624 GL! Hope the end is nigh for your PIO!
  • Too much experience with this during IF treatments.  Everything PP said.  Also, just so you know there are different types of oil that it comes in.  Ethyl oleate oil is the thinnest and was the easiest for me to tolerate.  I was allergic to the sesame oil that I started out with.  I'm sure you'll do fine with it.

  • It's an injection. I have to go to clinic to have it done. Insurance won't pay for it unless I have it done at clinic. Anyways. One a week from week 16 to 36. The site of injection is pretty sore tonight and shot was done at 10 am. I'll try to massage area after shots. Anything else to help with the pain after? The shot itself didn't hurt at all. Well a normal little poke. But that's it.
  • Ugh, I'm sorry. If it's at a clinic they likely won't warm the oil for you, but getting a heat pack for after could help. You can order the disposables for snowboarding/skiing on Amazon, those work really well, and just put it on the spot between your pants and the site. Walking around will also help work the oil into the muscle.
  • Ok thanks for the advice! Appreciate it!
  • I hate to resurrect an old thread but have a question for you ladies. I have been on PIO injections since week 6 and and am now 26 weeks. I had no issues at first but have now had hives for almost 4 weeks. I think it may be progesterone related but it seems like it would have happened a lot sooner. Did anyone else develop a gradual allergy? I have seen some instances of this via google but I am looking for some feedback here since so far my doctor has not suggested or confirmed that the PIO could be the cause of my hives.

@love4labs326- How long were you on them before you realized you were allergic? So far I have been using sesame oil but last week I called the doctor and asked him to change my suspension. I am starting the shots in ethyl oleate today and am hoping for an improvement.
