For fun… do you think the baby can feel when you rub your belly??? I read that no they cant-but Im pretty sure they can. When I rub my belly he always moves/ kicks. Thoughts? Opinions?

  • 30w 3 days. He does the same with the doppler for me. I think they feel/ see something :) so interesting to me what its like for them inside!
  • I'm wondering if they feel things like hunger.  If I'm hungry, does that mean LO is hungry too?  Or is the feed via the umblical cord more or less continuous, regardless of when/how much I've eaten?

  • I think they can feel when you rub your belly! And I swear mine knows when it's my hand touching my belly or when it's someone else's. He responds to me every time I put my hand on my belly and the second anyone else tries to feel him move, he stops. And will not move until it's my hand back on my stomach. It's super funny. But he is even stubborn for DH so I feel bad for him sometimes because he wants to feel what I feel all day.

She will be SO active and as soon as my fiance puts his hand on my belly to feel her she will stop kicking. It's almost like a game she's playing. haha I don't know if she can feel his hand there but I just think its funny.

Same here. Sometimes when DH puts his hand on my belly she will stop nudging/kicking. Only responds to my hand it seems mostly. Though the other night, DH was talking to my belly and she was definitely kicking when he would say something or ask a question type thing. It was cute. Thankfully he has felt her a few times but every time I'm like she is kicking she then stops unless it's just me.

All of them must sense who it is, it's crazy how much they sense already!

  • My baby also squirms whenever they use the doppler. It seems odd that baby can recognize songs (that's what my ticker says today at 34 weeks) and see light but feeling has no effect? I don't buy it haha.
  • This little one defiantly stops kicking when DH touches by belly. But if my dog is lying her head on me he loves to kick her. Also it must me warmth or light because if I have a blanket on me he goes crazy but as soon as I lift it he stops.

Same thing happens with us every single time! Baby boy was flipping all around the other night and as soon as H put his hand over where he'd been? *crickets*

After a few seconds of no movement I said "stranger danger!" and at least got a laugh out of my H. He's felt him move before but not huge movements and gets to feel all the hiccups. Man, this kid hiccups a lot

I second baby knowing whose hand is on him! SO will put his hand on my rolling belly and nothing. But he can see my stomach going all over the place. Baby has kicked SO when he rests his head on my belly and it makes him laugh. Welcome to my life on the daily :)
  • I have no idea, but I can say this little dude is moving so much! It's like he's building a rocket ship in there! My stomach doesn't stop! When the sun shines through my window, on my belly he seems to really respond to it!

  • I guess they know our pulse rhythm so know our hands. Mine responds the second I touch my tummy. But when it's kicking hard it mostly stops for DH! I wondered if holding tummy made it warmer perhaps and they can sense change in temperature?!?
  • how could they not feel it when you push on your belly? I mean maybe they don't feel our exact touch, but if it shifts the uterus they must feel it moving around them.

  • AND if they can't feel stuff why does the U/S tech continuously poke and shake me to get him to move around?
  • I always assumed they could feel it. If he's being hyperactive and elbowing me, I'll sometimes push back firmly, then let go. He tends to pull back, then push back again. Like a game!

I've also felt him react to the midwife doing the ultrasound. She used to tap my tummy to get him to switch positions, too.

Why wouldn't they be able to feel firm pushes on your belly??
  • Im not talking about being poked obviously they feel that. Im talking about like gently rubbing your tummy- you know, a mothers touch.

Also yes its funny any time anyone else trys to feel kicks he stops and im looked at like im crazy.

ahh ok, I was wondering what I missed. I'm a very literal person so I was like wait...what? That doesn't make sense!

I'm just shy of 30 weeks right now so I don't know how much of the subtle stuff she is sensing like a hand resting on my belly or sights and sounds.

@SU1989 yes! This!!! ^^ my LO knows when it's my hand somehow. We have friends over every Thursday for tacos and to watch Amerifan Horror Story from the previous night and for months now our friends have tried to feel her kick/move. The second the touch my belly she stops, and then starts again when I touch it. It's like a game to her! My poor husband hardly gets to feel her move because she always (for whatever reason) stops. It makes me sad that he can't experience the pregnancy in the same way as I do, but makes me so thankful to be a woman and to have this amazing capability. Makes all the aches, pains and bathroom trips worth it to spend the whole day bonding with my sweet baby girl!!!

Nope, the placenta feeds baby constantly, so he/she never feels hunger in the womb.
