Pregnancy-Safe Hair Dye?

Does anyone have any advice on pregnancy safe hair dye?
My hair is normally platinum/white and black. But right now horribly yellowed and brown.
I know that bleach would be an unsafe choice for the most part so i know i'm fine with being stuck with 5 inch roots and grown out yellow-blonde,
but im wondering if a Henna type black dye would be okay for me to atleast use on that part of my hair.

I know that Lush has a blue-black Henna i would consider.
But im definitely interested to hear from people who've found one they did feel safe using and had good results with!

Re: Pregnancy-Safe Hair Dye?

  • Personally I would get some low lights put in. A colour that is closer to your natural hair colour would work well. This will stop your roots growing out in a block and give you a darker natural looking blonde that won't look "rooty" as it grows out. Low lights will also reduce exposure to colour and avoid using bleach. Brown henna is safe for pregnancy but black henna is not.

  • I agree with PP. I currently have blonde highlights, so at my next appt in the 2nd tri I'll ask for lowlights to blend in my roots. In the mean time I've been using a purple shampoo every so often to keep the yellow toned down.
  • Ive definitely been using the purple shampoo and I have a grey conditioner as well. Part of the issue is that i super quick dyed my roots before i went for my IUI and rushing it made the color not develop as well as it it should have so i have like dark brown roots, then like yellow blonde, then my regular platnium, and then the brown under neath, im just hating it.

What kind of low lights would be safe? They arent done using bleach? I could just be wrong but it seems odd to me that low lights would be safe especially if even black henna isnt. But im not a hair stylist so who knows!
  • Ah, gotcha. That's frustrating! My OB explained that while she couldn't tell me that hair color was safe, per se, she did say highlights on the 2nd tri and after were much more preferable to full color as the dye doesn't sit directly on your scalp, thus less if any is absorbed in your skin. The lowlights would just help bridge the time until you can do another platinum processing, if you choose.

I plan to do the lowlights since I will be growing out the blonde. For me, it was fun for a while, but a little too much maintenance for my natural color! Plus I'm lazy ;)

A low light is a darker colour than the one you have so it doesn't use bleach which is used in light blondes. You can ask for a bleach free colour. Using low lights will make the overall blonde darker as you have fine streaks of brown/ dark blonde running throught it. It works well if they use 2 or 3 colours that tone together. I used to bleach my hair platinum blonde but it wrecked my hair, it became stretchy like chewing gum and so dry and brittle after a year I had to stop. Now I have a warm honey blonde which I love.
  • My cousin is a hair dresser and I asked both her and my doctor about this yesterday! I'm in the second tri starting tomorrow they said it's safer to wait until then to do anything. As for staying blonde, I'm getting a partial weave with an ammonia free dye. As long as you avoid changing your base color you won't get the dye into your bloodstream through your scalp:)

Forgot to say, the reason low lights are safer than block colouring is because using foils means the dye doesn't touch the scalp!
  • Hi! I am a hairdresser and I can say if you ever want to do anything else with your hair please done use henna!!!! It is such a bitch to ever get out and it has a red hue it is never black. You can safely color your hair through pregnancy if it is off the scalp!! So anything in foils.. you can ask your hairdresser to keep doing the platinum in foils if that's what you want.. as far as a dark color it IS okay to do on the scalp if it is ammonia free color!! Which is usually just and demi - permanent in most lines :)
  • So glad someone brought this up. My problem is I have horrible grey hair. My family all started to get greys at 18. I am 29 and about 30% grey. I have been waiting to ask my hair dresser because she is a friend and I haven't told any of them yet.
  • Candacenellie Awesome, your reply was so helpful! I would love to at the very least do the black! So ammonia-free black it is and ill consider doing the platnium foiled and slightly away from scalp as well. Also part of me is thinking this might be the time to have fun with my hair and just dye the platinum like blue or something!

jmohio At 26 im also a bit grey... i can notice it but i dont know how much other people can.
  • Oh my friends all make fun of me. One of my best friends bought me rollers and a cover one day. I try not to let the grey show anymore but with not being able to dye it right now it is pretty bad.

@jmohio. Real friends don't make you feel bad. I say ##*$ them. If it makes you really unhappy, use an ammonia free colour. The risk to the baby is so minute and I feel in your case you shouldn't walk around feeling bad throughout pregnancy!
  • I decided to try this one. Ammonia free and organic... and ill still try to stay a bit away from the roots.
Havent decided on bleaching with foils or not just yet.

I use bleach and I am not worried one bit. I think it depends on what you're comfortable with.

  • I have horrible roots, and am considering just letting my hair grow out at his point. I'm almost 35, and don't have any grays. But I'm sure they're coming any day now. I haven't had my natural color since age 15. I guess now would be my last chance before those grays show up. I'm kinds glad you posted this; I think it helped me decide what to do with my hair.
  • I have thought about it too, just letting my hair grow out, or just going all 1 color because the two tone hair is kind of a pain to keep up with. But i just am not ready to not be a blonde anymore.. lol

I kept up with my blonde during my first pregnancy. I went brown after that. Dyeing your hair is fine during pregnancy.

I'm a hairstylist and it's perfectly fine to color your hair during pregnancy. My sister went grey early and I colored hers with both of her pregnancies. Just ask your hairdresser to use a lower volume of developer like 10% or a Demi-permanent color. The Demi won't stay as long or cover your roots as well as a permanent color though. Make sure they do a "patch test" on your skin first to make sure you don't have a reaction to it. Hormones change the PH levels of your skin and hair so you could react badly to it. Hope this helped some and good luck!

  • I am glad to hear I am not the only one with a few greys in their 20s I'm 25 and have a few strands of grey hair already. They aren't very noticeable unless you are actually doing my hair and looking straight at my roots.  So to be on the safe side I'm going to wait till after the baby comes to color my hair.

  • At 29 Ive been going grey for a few years now. I haven't had my highlights done since March and I desperately need them done! Glad I saw this thread, since I forgot to ask my OB at my last appt.

  • I found this website that I LOVE for hair dye. They dont use any of the chemicals that are restricted in the UK and Europe, which has stricter cosmetic regulations than the US. They also have excellent customer service, and a subscription service where you get a full kit every month, 2 months, however often you need:

  • My OB shrugged it off when I asked her--- she wasn't at all concerned about hair dye.  I need to deal with my roots asap so that was a relief.  I just get blonde highlights but quite a lot of them.  She is not a laid-back doctor in general so when SHE shrugs something off, I really do relax about it.
