Asking whether you're pregnant or not?

What are you telling coworkers or friends when they ask if you are pregnant? I told some coworkers we were trying to pregnant, so now I'm being asked if I'm pregnant or not. I don't like lying, but didn't want to tell people until I was 12 weeks.

Re: Asking whether you're pregnant or not?

  • I have just been telling people I'm unsure. Basically consistently in the TWW period. Gives you a reason to not drink at holiday parties, and even have a doctors appt, without having to spill the beans. Will buy you a bit of time at least. And even then, you can add that you don't plan on telling people until your 12 weeks will get them to stop asking.

Good luck!! I haven't had too many people ask yet, but am dying to tell!! Only DH knows.

  • Haven't had this issue, but the only people I'm ever around who I know are coworkers, and some of them know and for the ones that don't, I've been wearing looser tops to hide my bloat.
  • I agree with @DSMLove - I had shared with a few coworkers that I was trying and one recently asked me if I had any success - I just told her I didn't have anything to share at this time, and when I did I would let her know.

Most respectful people understand, but there are definitely people who don't take the polite hint and then will run a mile with it.

You could always respond with 'no news yet'. That's kind of vague enough that you aren't lying, as there is no publicly available news yet!

  • I had an aquaintance ask me that because I didn't drink at dinner (I hardly ever drink). So I replied with the question, "Why would you ask me that?" That shut down the convo pretty quickly. The only people who know at that he moment are my dh and one of my clients who I am very close to. I'm a hairstylist, so I am proud I have only spilled the beans to one person besides dh.
I finally figured out the ticker thing! (I was so excited I thought I'd tell you all) LOL

  • Only person that has asked me is my SIL and she has been asking the last 2 years. Ugh Christmas Eve will be rough but I already have a decoy drink plan to hopefully fend her off and then we'll tell the immediate family Christmas morning.

H is the only one that knows right now (and no one knows we were even trying!) I am very excited to tell my mom tomorrow on her birthday!!

I just say, "We are working on it. I will let you know if there's anything to share."
  • I second PP who suggested saying something like "no news yet". I think it's easier than flat out lying and it also excuses not drinking.

I get this question a lot from clients at work (my daughter will just turn 2 this Saturday) but I've known some of my clients so long they know I've wanted 2 kids sooner than later. It's hard when they say "do you have any news for me yet" I just respond with
Not yet, but you'll know for sure when I do.
I badly want to tell them so they can join in my excitement.... Little bit longer
Oh and the fact that I recently traded in my Toyota Camry for a Toyota Sienna minivan may be a dead giveaway
  • I have decided that I will make the decision when I am approached.  Not many knew we were trying at work.  So I guess if I get fat enough and someone has enough guts they may ask....depending on my mood I may say "yes, but we are wanting to keep it low key" or "no...thanks for calling me fat."
  • I haven't had this issue yet. Only one coworker knows we're trying and she would never ask if I was pregnant. She tends to stay away from personal questions. All my other coworkers and bosses, however, think I don't even want kids. So I think it'll come as a shock to them. When I first started working there four years ago, I told everyone I never wanted kids, which was true at the time. I was really young and didn't realize I would change my mind. As for family, my parents already know and DH and I have decided to tell the rest of the family on Christmas. We can't wait any longer.
  • I've told a few coworkers but I also don't like lying to the other ones that don't know. So I just say "we shall see when the times right"
I have 2 managers and I told one bc she's like a mom. The other manager is my direct manager but she can't keep her mouth shut if it was sewed shut. So I'll tell her when I'm ready for everyone to know.

  • I have a terrible poker face and hate lying so it's difficult for me to think of creative ways to play a little coy. I agree with PP on the "we don't have anything to share yet" line. With Baby #1, I used "you'll be one of the first to know" when close friends or family would ask and we weren't quite ready to tell the world.

  • I had a lunch with coworkers today and they got on the topic of pregnancy (I work with all women). Then they all started saying that they're sure I'll be the next one to be pregnant. It killed me to just sit there and smile! I just said "we'll see" and left it at that.

I'm going home for Christmas this year and I'm planning to tell my parents and sister, but wanting to keep it a secret from extended family. DH and I have been married for over 7 years so I know they will ask about having kids. I'll probably just say something vague "in the next year or so". Definitely not a lie!

What is your decoy drinking plan? I need ideas for my work Christmas party this weekend!

@alyssajrob22 I know you weren't asking me but I just went to a christmas party and had a glass of wine in one had and sparkling water in the other. everyone thought I was double fisting, even my husband! so that went really well:)
  • If people care enough to ask I've been telling them. A good group of friends and family knew we were trying and they are the ones I'd tell if we had a loss anyways.
With my son we didn't share and I wish we would have for the support!

It's really tough to keep the secret that long when people know you were trying. Can you buy yourself some time by just saying, "I don't have anything to share yet." It's not really lying, because you are just saying that you aren't sharing.
This is GREAT wording! I have some really close mommy friends that I get together with every, single week and we are always jokingly asking each other if the other is pregnant. I am SO worried about this because I can't lie, but I also cant tell them before I tell my parents! I am totally stealing this wording :)

This just happened to me at a Christmas party this weekend. We has just found out three days before and my friend asked how the baby making was going, unfortunately loud enough for another nearby to hear. I told her it's going and she said, "so are you pregnant and just not telling people?" Which totally threw me. I made a weird face and said I'll call you later and walked away. We used to be closer but she got a new job and stopped returning calls, so j didn't want to tell her super early and I didn't want to basically then tell everyone else at the party. I was annoyed that she would say that though. I mean, yes, if I am Pregnant and not telling people, then I'm not gonna tell you yet! We haven't even told our folks yet because we are gonna go home for Christmas and tell them in person when I'll be 6 weeks. I'm gonna practice the "no news yet!" answer. I like that
  • I do not expect many people to ask.  Only two people knew we were trying and the last time I brought something up to one of them she said "well I knew you were trying but didn't want to intrude", if only more people were like that.  My parents don't understand I don't drink a lot or often so if I ever decline drinks (which is often) or I'm sick my mom always "jokingly" asks if I'm pregnant.  However, I think it's gotten brought up so much she doesn't bat an eye when I blow it off.

@alyssajrob22 I found out the day of my Xmas party so that night I had a lot of soda waters that had lime and lemons in them. Occasionally I switched it up and got just a Coke or cranberry juice. No one noticed ;)
