need advice- hurt back

So, I piked LO up wrong on saturday. Went to the emergency room on Monday because it was hurting to breathe and I was just mentally done with the pain by then. They gave me a morphine shot and Valium and told me to pump and dump while taking the prescriptions they sent me home with. I had a follow up today with a spine specialist and have to have an MRI after the holidays. My question is, I am breastfeeding, or was till I hurt my back. But, both Doctors said there was no alternative to pumping and dumping while on the pain pills. I have enough frozen milk to get us through a few more days. Does anyone know if there is anything I could take where I could pump and dump after taking the pill but still be able to breast feed later. Kind of like you can do if you drink a glass of wine.  Not taking somthing isn't an option right now, it's too painful to even hold her without them. And please no mommy shaming, I am already really upset that I am even in this situation.

  • I'd maybe make a call to your ob or Pediatrition and ask them what they would advise you to do. Maybe even a LC could give you some insight. I hope you get to feeling better asap!

  • I was prescribed Percocet after giving birth because I had a hematoma from tearing. My doctor said it was safe to take while breastfeeding. Are you taking something stronger than that? I would think it would be very similar to alcohol. Those drugs are short acting and won't stay in your system for more than approximately 4 hours. I would ask your doctor a lot more questions about this. I'm so sorry you're in this situation!
  • @majormayhem210 sounds like you need something strong, but if it's possible to use a heating pad and Tylenol, that's perfectly fine. Maybe go for acupuncture for immediate relief? Sounds really painful, hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm giving you a giant but gentle hug. I would call my pediatrician in regards to the medicine. Please don't feel guilty, in order to be the best mom in the world (which you totally are) you are doing the right thing, taking care of yourself. Your little girl is very lucky to have a mom who loves her very much.
  • Check LactMed, or ask your pedi or family Dr for a BF-safe alternative. Some drs have little experience with bfing and have a blanket pump/dump recommendation.

  • I know a lot of us had C sections and were on pain meds while breastfeeding postpartum. I took Ultraum (tramadol) and didn't have to pump and dump and my doctor originally was going to prescribe Norco (which makes me nauseous). I wonder if it's the benzo Valium (I'm a nurse and just curious) that they are worried about. I have a feeling there are definitely good alternatives for you. Call your OB and/or pediatrician. You should not have to stop BFing over this. I really hope you feel better soon!
  • Thanks for advice. I only needed them for a few days and the stopped. @hollidar It was mostly the codeine in the tylenol 3, there is research the breast fed babies are particularly sensitive to opiates and it can cause serious complications. I also read tramadol is okay. If It happens again I will ask for that next time. On another note part of reason I was so upset was she was rejecting the bottle completely, but this whole ordeal led us to find one that she will accept. That is the silver lining I guess.
