Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleeping Face Down!

Okay, so we finally transitioned DD from rock n play to crib, and tonight she's started sleeping on her face. Not with her head turned to the side, but literally ON HER FACE. She's 6 months old. I've heard it's fine, but I guess I just need more opinions and reassurance. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep! Should I be turning her??

Re: Sleeping Face Down!

  • Nope. Don't worry about it. She's old enough that if she's flipping to sleep on her tummy, she can reposition herself if she can't breathe. My 5-month old does this. It worried me at first, too. Eventually she will start turning her head to the side. If it keeps you awake worrying, though, and doesn't bother baby to move her, you can do it for your peace of mind. Just remember she's likely to just flip right back. :)

  • This is a tough one for me because when I told my Pedi that my son was doing this she told me to turn him. She said that when they are really young (can't remember the age), babies can fall into such a deep sleep that they don't even realize they can't breathe. Of course this scared the crap out of me.

BUT, I know my son was much younger than 6 months. At some point when they are rolling and more mobile you just have to let them sleep how they want to sleep. It could look worse than it actually is.

  • My 4.5 month old has been doing this for over a week now.  She does turn her head very slightly to the side, but not much.  I am not proud of how many times i have gone in there and put my hand on her back to make sure she's breathing!  But she is.  She just likes to sleep that way.  She's very mobile while she sleeps, so she can move if she needs to.  i watched her on the video monitor last night, half asleep at 2am, flip from her back to her belly, shimmy all the way to the other end of the crib, and then flip back onto her back.  Without fully waking up.  It was nuts. :-)
  • Thank you all! I did go in and turn her head to the side, but left her on her tummy. The next time I checked the video monitor she was on her back, so I was finally able to rest easy. I might ask my Pedi just to see what she thinks. I'll feel better about her sleeping like this in a couple months, I just consider 6 months to be pretty little still. She has a VERY small blanket animal that she sleeps with, and she really enjoys draping it over her face. So, I'm always going in and pulling that off as well.
  • My son starting rolling to his tummy and sleeping like that around 5 months. BUT, his head was always turned to the side so I could see there was nothing blocking his ability to breathe. It's probably ok but I think it's good to check with the pedi for your own peace of mind.
  • My LO is 4 months and his pediatrician said that he can sleep on his tummy because he has really good control of his head and he'll move it if he can't breath but he's head his either on the left side or right his never just on his face
  • This is my worry which is funny because my first 2 did it and I thought it was no big whoop. They are 8 & 18. Now after having abc pounded into my head I'm tempted to keep baby in his little bassinet until he's 40!
that being said my 8 & 18 year olds lived, so I guess it's fine.
