Is D&C necessary?

Hi ladies,

I just wanted some input. My friend is pregnant measuring around 5 weeks. She had her blood test done last wed and again on fri. The doc says her hcg level isnt rising high enough (should have doubled but was only +200). Doc says most likely miscarriage and to schedule a d&c. However she got an u/s and there is a sac and yolk. Can a normal pregnancy develop? Im concerned becaus she scheduled her d&c but I think she should wait at least another week... I sometimes think d&c are unnecessarily scheduled.. tia for your inputs!

Re: Is D&C necessary?

  • An early pregnancy like that I wouldn't think would need a d& c , that it would just spontaneously miscarry on its own. I would wait to be sure.

  • I would recommend a second opinion. Five weeks is way too early to be making any decisions. What if she really isn't five weeks, but earlier? I also think your info is off. You would not be able to see anything with an hcg of 200. I hope everything turns out ok for her.
  • @ddrrt1982- sorry I meant it increased by 200.. her meausrements were around 400 on wed and then around 500 on fri.

  • I would ask the doctor why they feel a D&C is necessary. Most docs recommend seeing if a woman will miscarry naturally before going to a D&C that early on.

  • I agree with everyone else. Most pregnancies that end that early are able to miscarry naturally. But I would also be worried there was a chance it's still viable.
