Babies: 9 - 12 Months

exclusively breastfeeding too long?

My son is almost 10 months old and is still exclusively breastfeeding. The doctor says this is safe but I feel like it's not typical. He refuses to eat anything but breast milk water and Popsicles. And tips or is this normal

  • You should be pushing solids more because that will become his primary source of nutrition after a year old plus he just needs to learn.

Also, popsicles are totally unnecessary and just full of sugar.

  • We have tried to push them but he refuses to have anything to do with them
  • How are you offering solids? Purees? Table foods? Warm, cold? Definitely keep offering as eventually baby will need to switch, and I agree with PP. I would skip Popsicles and even water at this point, as baby should be trying to get as many calories as possible from BM of not getting any nutrition from other sources.
  • My daughter had no interest in solids until she was 14-15 months old and she breastfeed exclusively until then and then after.
  • No Popsicles! For like another year minimum!

He needs to try solids or it could cause (or there may already be) sensory processing issues going on. You don't want to need ot later because he didn't experiment with foods!
  • Maybe ask your doctor about some kind of occupational therapy or speech therapy for his mouth? There might be something going on, such as a tongue tie or sensory issues that are making him refuse food. If you feel like something is wrong, trust your instincts. Take comfort knowing that your son is healthy now, and you have time to teach him through modeling to enjoy food.

Otherwise my advice is to try to relax and be calm about it. Sometimes babies sense our stress about things and it makes them stressed. Keep offering different kinds of food and act nonchalant about it.

I usually lurk, but I wanted you to feel free to follow your instincts here!!

To add some context about where I am coming from with this post, my son is also10 months. He has been eating small amounts of solids since 6 months. He is pretty much done with pureed now, and ears about1/4 cup of food pieces at each meal, often less. This is a small amount of food, but succeed her is nursing and following his percentile through the charts I am not concerned.
