Planning vacation...WWYD?

We take a trip to Destin, Fl every year and stay on Eglin AFB. (DH is prior enlisted ADAF) We usually go in June but with baby 2 on the way, we either need to go early, like March- spring break for me, or late summer, August, early September after baby is born.

Which would you choose? We have a 3.5 yo DD and I'm afraid March will be too cold still and the water won't be warm enough but DH is worried that I won't enjoy myself very much with a 2 month old.

Would you skip vacation this year all together? Early? Late?

Re: Planning vacation...WWYD?

  • Imo, vacation in the cold or vacation with a new baby is better than no vacation. And I think one last family vacay before you're a family of 4 would be nice (:

  • We're in a similar situation. We are planning a vacation with friends (to Destin area or Gulf Shores) in early August. We're getting a large house, and there will be several kids there. Strangely I have no anxiety about vacationing with a two year old and two month old, however I'm stressing about whether to splurge and fly or risk it and drive. Like the PP said - a vacation with an infant is better than none at all! :)
  • DH and I are planning on going up to his family's cabin in August or September. DS will be 20 months old and I'm not too worried about LO#2. I plan on BFing, so that should make traveling with baby easy- no extra bottles or formula to pack and haul around. We found with DS the first couple months is the best time to get out and do anything- they just eat and sleep.

I'm planning to head to my parents' beach house (4 hours away, on an island) ASAP after baby is born, and then travel to Europe in mid/late August to visit family.  I think if March will really be too cold (I don't know), and the beach is the main/only entertainment, then maybe August is better.  However, since Florida is such a spring break hotspot, I'd think you'd be OK in March too:)  All those people probably aren't freezing, right?
  • I would definitely take a vacation. The worst of the three options is skipping it entirely! If it were me, I would go in late August/early September. Travelling with a really young child can be a lot easier than travelling with a toddler. And the beach is a relaxing trip, so it's not like you'll need to drag the baby from place to place with a packed itinerary. Additionally, I would avoid Florida in March. While the weather may be fine, the water will be too cold to swim. And as previously mentioned, March is the time when drunk college students flock to the beach in droves, which may not be ideal for both pricing and peaceful, family fun.
  • Go in March or earlier if possible. Some Spring Breaks are in March. I am in FL and it's 80 today. :-( My friend in Destin is having warm weather too, but it's slightly cooler on the water.
  • We go to Destin every May. I don't think I'd want to go on a beach vacay with the water being too cold to enjoy. I'd probably opt to go in August after school starts. Less people...

  • We went to the Destin/Fort Walton area last year for spring break. It was the last week in March. We loved it. The water was chilly, but we went in a few times. Quite a few people were in the water. We basically sat on the beach the whole week as well as went to the piers. We had no issues with drunk college students, it was mostly families. We will be going again this year around the same time! I can't comment on what the area is like in August, but the water would be warmer. It might be hard to have a 2-3 month old with though.

  • I would go with the baby, personally. At that age I would just pop the baby in a wrap or carrier and let him/her snooze away most of the day on your chest while you walk around and play with the 3 y.o.
