How much do you pay your babysitters?

Trying to get a feel for what an acceptable pay rate is. I am having my 16 y.o sister watch my LO during my docotor appointment next week, and I want to compensate her appropriately. We will also be having an 18 y.o college student watching him on occasion, would you pay the 18 y.o more?

I am the first of my friends to have a LO so I am not sure what the "going rate" is.

Re: How much do you pay your babysitters?

  • Prior to having LO, I was paid 12$ an hour for nannying an infant (I am in college). I feel like it was a pretty fair rate. Although I have friends that have babysat babies for 10 an hour.

  • I think it depends on your area and how many LOs. In my area the going rate for a high school kid is about $15 per hour. Ouch!!!! Professional services charge about $20/hr in my area so I was surprised by how many moms near me pay such a similar rate for a kid to watch their LOs. Some folks add an extra $5/hr for each additional child.
  • You can check out care.com for rates.

Professionals in Miami range from 10-25 an hour, depending on exp.

I'd probably pay a young family member 10 per hour and the college student 12-13.
  • It really depends on the area. Here the rate is about $8 to $12 an hour.
  • For my family friends I ran between $12 and $13 an hour. The $13 was for my friend that had multiples and I watched their brood for long periods of time. If it was a short date night kind of deal I would have charged more.

If I would have been watching someone I didn't know's LO(s) I would have charged around $15, justifying it by saying that I'm CPR-PRO, Basic First-Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certified/not their neighbor's kid.

I'd pay based on experience and if the person is CPR/first aid trained. I'd also probably pay someone that was in school for childcare more since my LO would benefit from that I'm sure.
  • It probably depends on your geographical area. I used to teach at a daycare in a pretty affluent neighborhood and got at least $15 an hour for babysitting kids outside of school. Of course, I have a BA, and certification in child development and CPR/First Aid training. In college, it was more like $10, depending on how many kids I was watching and for how long.
  • I work in a gym daycare so a lot of the parents at my job pay me or my co workers on the side to babysit usually it's about $10-$12 per hour & most of the parents give more or less depending on how many kids ur babysitting & their ages.
  • How much do you think it costs around san francisco ? I found someone great but at 17$ :/
  • Thanks for the input. So I am thinking like $10/hr for my sister, and maybe $13 for the college student.

That sounds totally reasonable. I know for my friends , they pay a flat rate ( anywhere from 9-15) for a hour for hanging out at the house and then if the babysitter has to do anything
Like take the kids out for an appointment or adventure then they tend to add extra on for the effort.
  • Our babysitter charges $11/hr. She is 21 with experience.

Doesn't surprise me. San Fran is one of the priciest cities in the country. Do they have experience / certifications?
  • I think I'm in the wrong business.

Or if kiddo is sick. The family I nannied for had three kids - when I watched them they were 16 months give or take, 5 years, and 11 years old. The younger two were both sick when I worked for them occasionally- those days they sometimes brought me dinner and I'd have a bonus on my check at the end of my pay period. Sick kids are absolutely zero fun and tons of stress.

Yes she does, and she is two houses away from mine. Will cook, light clean, do laundry and take her to her house during awake time to be around two little girls that are attending pre-school with her best friend... All great points! She is also flexible

$17 sounds like a steal if she is also cooking and cleaning.
  • She will do purees for baby, not my dinner(just wanted to clarify) thanks for the input I feel better then :)

The pre-school aged kids might freak me out a little since kids that age are Petri dishes; she sounds more than qualified and reasonably priced though!
