Moving-Need Dr/Hospital Recommendations!

Hi all-

Normally I just lurk around here and leave comments when I can be helpful, but I could really use some advice! My work has just told me that they will need me to move to the Norfolk, Va area next month to take over a new building. We haven't started looking at homes or anything, but my first concern is finding a new doctor and hospital to deliver! I'm 12 weeks now and will absolutely ask my OB for recommendations when I see him next week, but figured I would ask here too just on the chance that maybe some of you are familiar with the area and can provide some feedback? We know no one in the area so I'm a little lost right now!

Thanks!

  • Hi! I don't have any advice as I do not live in the area, but I think there is a local Virgina group where you might have better luck!

  • Thanks! I didn't realize there were local groups, I'll post there too!
  • The local group isn't very active unfortunately. We might be moving to the Norfolk area soon after baby is born. I'd suggest looking for doctors covered by insurance and start investigating them online. That's what I normally do (military wife. I've had a LOT of different doctors.) If you can find one before you move get your medical records transferred early for best continuity of care.

  • I agree with PP about looking to see who would be covered by your insurance. Also, I'd check out https://www.babyfriendlyusa.org/find-facilities to see if there'd be a baby friendly hospital near you. Depending on what type of birth and post-partum stuff you have in mind, baby friendly hospitals are great- they emphasize skin-to-skin with the parents, encourage and support breastfeeding, etc.

  • I just moved to a new state and got pregnant a few months after moving and closing on a house. Craziness!!

I checked my local hospital to see if my insurance covered it and then picked a midwife/OB group based on the hospital.

A lot of people pick a dr and then go to the hospital they deliver at. For me it was easier picking a hospital first. It narrowed down the list of doctors I could see and I picked based on online reviews.

Not knowing anyone in the area, it's hard to pick a doctor because there are SO MANY!!! All hospitals should have a website that lists out what doctors deliver there. They should also provide information on their L&D department.

Good luck!!! Moving is stressful enough!!
  • Thank you all so much! I hadn't even thought about my insurance since that will be changing too! (It's through my husband job because it is way cheaper) That adds yet another wrinkle in this disaster! I've lived in my town all my life so this is definitely a new challenge.

@cooperlane I will definitely pick the hospital I want to deliver in first! There are a couple to choose from in the area so that's the easiest way to narrow it down!

My sister and I born in Norfolk (edit bc so much was cut off) where I grew up in NC that was the closest hospital
So my mom and dad drove 2.5 hours while my mom was in labor to have us there. I was also with my best friend when she gave birth at the Navel hospital there.
  • I am in the middle of the same thing and literally was just on my insurance page to search for providers! Usually you can find ratings and such online as well and maybe you could go meet with a few of them to be sure you like them?
  • You've gotten good advice.  I'll add that you might want to look for a local FB garage sale page.  Ours are called <whatever the city is> Mom's Swap, Shop and Talk or something. If you join one of those you'd have tons of local mom's who would likely give you their personal experiences.
