Migranes and meds- worried

edited December 2015 in 1st Trimester
Hi, I'm 8.5 weeks pregnant and been having migraned lately, three in the past week. Usually I rarely have them, this must be pregnancy related. So I took a dose of two ib profen liquigels two of the times and then only one today. But now I read that ibprofen is not recommended to take during pregnancy. I should have researched first but I was in so much pain. Should I be worried?

Don't worry about the doses you took already, but avoid ibuprofen in the future. You can try Tylenol and some caffeine (same idea as excedrin migraine, without the aspirin) or talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for migraines.

ETA: I've also found that placing an ice pack on the back of my neck and on my forehead, and lying down in a dark room really helps!

  • I too only get migraines during pregnancy. My last pregnancy I was usually able to get them to go away by taking a Tylenol as soon as I felt it coming on and getting an iced coffee from Starbucks. If that didn't do the trick I was off to bed to sleep it off!
  • Cranio sacial massage really helps me with my migraines - some insurances cover it, but even if not - totally worth it.

This is one of the times you should go for more caffeine.  Essential oils can help too - mix 1-2 drops peppermint and eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil and rub where you usually feel the pain - temples, across forehead, sinuses, wherever.  If your migraines get bad enough, you can get prescribed a migraine med that is caffeine and tylenol and completely pregnancy safe (sorry the name of it escapes me right now) - ask your provider for a prescription.

  • I found Fioricet to be very effective for mine when I was pregnant. It is a combo of tylenol, butalbital & caffeine & is long lasting. If you're going to pop pain meds, might as well go with something that's long lasting so you're not dosing yourself every 4 hours.
  • Thank you all for your suggestions! I started drinking a little caffeine and it seems to help. Also I reallized I'm super tight in the neck and shoulder area, started doing neck exercises to release the tension. So far so good, no more meds for me for now.

Fioricet is indicated for an entire pregnancy, but advised to be used conservatively in 1st tri, and Relpax is deemed okay in 2nd and 3rd tri.

Also, beta blockers are the new thing to use as a preventative during pregnancy, and Botox has been approved as a preventative in pregnancy for a few years now (although there's 9 million hoops to jump through to get it approved).

  • magnesium and riboflavin (B2) - make sure to look up what safe dosages are for pregnancy. Can take these supplements daily and some studies have shown they decrease migraine frequency/severity
