Prenatal choice for delicate stomach?

Before learning I was pregnant, I'd been taking the Centrum Woman's Multi-Vitamin for several months and never had any stomach upset.  After testing positive, I tried One-A-Day Prenatal for about a week and consistently had diarrhea every morning and was lost about 3 lbs, despite eating more often and higher quantity... not good.  I tried shifting it to later in the day with no change.  Saturday I bought the Rainbow Light Prenatals, and my nausea has definitely picked up, and little change in the other uncomfortable symptom.  I started the B6/unisom regimen yesterday, and while the nausea is better this morning... still the loose stools... and still losing weight.

So, wondering if the iron is causing tummy troubles.  Planning to switch to flinstones gummy vitamins today.  My first OBGYN visit is next Wednesday, and I'll be about 7 weeks.  I know I need Iron and may need to make a switch further into pregnancy, but I can't be sending more out than is coming in!

Any experiences with this, ladies?

Re: Prenatal choice for delicate stomach?

  • I've been SO sick, and my prenatal hasn't bothered me. It's "Mamalicious" and I blend it with almond milk. Actually... I've been drinking it every morning  (I get the chocolate shake one) since it helps settle my MS.

  • I may have to try that.  I'm lactose intolerant, but almond milk may do the trick...
  • My OB prescribed me Prenate AM, and it has definitely helped with the nausea. I would call your ob, explain your issues and they should be able to give you 2-3 samples to try and see which one helps!

  • If it's the iron that's upsetting your stomach, there are prenatal vitamins out there that are iron free. I take the gummy prenatal vitamin because it contains no iron and still has the same amount of folic acid and vitamins in it. I have a stomach disease, and therefore can't take iron because it destroys the lining of my stomach when it's in a concentrated form like that. My OB just told me to eat tons of iron rich food, such as lean red meat and spinach, to get the iron my body needs. It's been working really great so far. So I recommend switching to an iron free prenatal and eating iron rich foods to make up for it if you think that's the issue.
  • You can always go back on your old trusty vitamin and add a folic acid supplement. My OB says any old vitamin is fine, as long as you're getting 800mg of folic acid. So he even recommends having a few Flintstone vitamins per day.
  • Thanks ladies.  The kids vitamin with no iron should be a good enough contrast with the prenatals I've been taking to see if the Iron is the problem.  I see the doctor for the first time next week, and have already called four different times with questions.  First time = 500 questions!!
  • They have a vegan one, with no milk at all.  The regular kind has a minimal amount of lactose in it. I am mildly lactose intolerant too, and the normal one doesn't both me, as long as I mix it with almond milk.

I'm a FTM too... it took forever to find one I could take due to allergies!

  • I can't remember off hand the brand name but I got mine at Costco in te big pack and the only ones that didn't make me sick. Also eating with breakfast was best timing for me
  • I just take the prenatal gummies. With my first pregnancy I learned that even when I'm pregnant my iron is perfect, regular prenatals with iron made me so sick, my Dr said 2 flinstones a day was enough and I also took flinstones with my second pregnancy. But I'm a kidult inside so I wanted the gummies this time lol
  • I use GNCs brand. Any other prenatal upsets my stomach.

  • I was taking a regular prenatal and my doctor said I could switch to the flint stones as well, I got the vitafusion gummy prenatal and since I've started taking them my morning sickness hasn't been half as bad!
  • Switched to the gummy flinstones for kids and about 2 days later, stopped having the every-morning-diarrhea problem.  Nausea is better, but that may be more of the B6/unisom combo!
