No driving?

Why?

i had a vaginal delivery. i was prescribed narcotic pain meds but i was put on a 2 week driving restriction before it was decided to give me that script so it wasn't due to that. I am fine and had no major complications. Anybody have an answer to this?

Re: No driving?

  • No help here! Just wanted to say if it was prior to that Rx, how odd that seems! I've never been told that or heard of anyone else who has... Interesting.

Maybe because of sleep deprivation? Lol
Curious myself to see if other ladies have been told this.

  • With DD I lost a lot of blood and because of that I was told no driving for two weeks. This time I had no major problems and was told I could drive as long as i hadn't taken a pain med.
  • I was told no driving for 2-4 weeks after my cesarean. I didn't take the narcotics I was prescribed, just the Motrin. I drove myself to my 2 week check up where she lifted my driving restriction. Oops.
  • I have been told no driving for 1-2 week with all 3 vaginal deliveries and never took narcotics. First I waited 2 weeks because I was an emotional wreck. The second I waited a week and this one I'm 5days post pardum and haven't drove but want to go get my kiddos from school tomorrow. I think whatever you feel comfortable with is fine.
  • odd- I was prescribed Percocet for pain if I need it and just told not to drive as long as I'm taking them. I have drove twice in two weeks but I hadn't taken any pain medications other than ibuprofen.
  • I was told no driving for two weeks also. I didn't have any pain meds at all.

  • I don't remember having any driving restrictions with DD. I had lifting restrictions and no vacuuming (yay!) but I don't remember anything about driving.

  • I have a 1 week driving restriction after a vaginal birth. Not sure if it's because it's standard for my OB or because of my blood pressure.
  • I can't lift or vacuum either but no one said no driving.
  • I was also prescribed Percocet for pain but nobody said anything about not driving. I drove to Walmart a few days after even while taking the pain meds....
  • Nope, I was allowed to drive right after with my first.
  • I'm not allowed to drive for a few weeks, but I also had a c-section and expected it. I've never heard of it for vaginally delivery.

I apparently am free to vacuum, though, so I'm a little jealous of some of you...
  • I drove myself home from the hospital with my first. If I remember correctly, I had more weight restrictions. Nothing heavier than a gallon of milk?
  • Same boat but no narcotics...
  • Only time I was told not to drive was after the birth of LO. With my first being a c-sec I didn't have a car anyways (7yrs ago) but I wouldn't have driven for a while if I did. Too painful and ended up with an infection at the incision site.
  • This came up on the November board awhile back (before my due dates got switched). I had never heard of it before then either. I suppose it's possible something was said about it with my first, but that was 8 years ago, and we didn't own a car then, so if so, it went in one ear and out the other, I guess! I definitely don't remember being told anything about not driving after my second or third. I am now 3 days pp with number 4, and drove myself to the store last night, so yeah...no driving restrictions this time either.

I was told 2 weeks too, with a no complication delivery and no narcotics. My ob said it was for insurance purposes. Apparently if in an accident within that timeframe insurance companies may not cover you due to inability to prove when harm was done (during l&d or in the accident). It doesn't completely make sense to me but my ob said she's seen it happen before.
  • I was also told no driving for 1 week, but I wasn't prescribed any meds and had no complications. I was wondering was I the only one. Good to know I'm not crazy!

J16 lurker. Weren't you having fainting spells? Could it be related to that?
  • I'm not allowed to drive until I'm off the narcotic (oxycodone) I was prescribed.

  • I actually asked my doctor about this at my appointment today. She said it has to do with reactions times. If you've torn or had a c-section you may not react as quickly in order to "protect" that area of the body. It makes sense I suppose??? I don't like driving anyway so I'm fine with this. :)
  • I was told not to drive for 2 weeks I had a vaginal delivery everything went well I was not prescribed any medications I was at the hospital for 2 days but the day I was discharged I drove and my husband was in the back with baby !
  • One of the nurses mentioned it to me as advisory - but I was never given an actual restriction.

I drove to the grocery store yesterday and regretted it majorly. Maybe it has to do with your stitch situation down under? I only had minor tearing but I'm not gonna lie - I was glad I was by myself (no baby) because I saw stars a couple times.

There it is. That makes sense
