No Bloodwork?

Hello!

I just got my BFP this morning and I called my Dr and they scheduled me to come in 4 weeks (putting me at almost 8 weeks PG). I asked about a blood test and they said HPTs are very accurate. Anyone not getting blood work and first appointment is for the U/S?

Re: No Bloodwork?

  • My first appointment was just for an U/S. The doctor gave my the paperwork to get routine blood work (no a PG test)  done at my 8 week appointment.

  • Yeah, my practice doesn't do blood work either. They take you between 8-10 weeks.

    The wait sucks.
  • very normal.  Bloodwork is usually only for specific reasons/cases, not routine practice.

  • Not sure what is normal.  I had my first BFP on 12/8 they had me come in for blood work 12/11. I got the results yesterday (76 HCG) they had me come back in again today, should have those results tomorrow.

I asked them why I had to come back she said because the level was so low my pregnancy is very early and they just want to ensure its progressing.

I guess they want to be extra sure!

  • My first OB had a mandatory class at 8-10 weeks. After the class they have you go to the labs for bloodwork. It didn't work out like that for me but that is usually their standard practice.

The wait does suck! I am scared daily about doing something wrong or going in for the next appointment and being told I am no longer pregnant. I am sure those are normal feelings :)

I went earlier for this pregnancy because my last one ended up being ectopic. But "early" was still 6.5 weeks.
  • Well glad to see I am good company. Just one (blue dye test) does not make it feel real at all. I am even scared to take a digi test tomorrow and that it wont say it!

  • Like PPs said, very normal. My first appt at about 4 weeks was just a urine confirmation, vitals, Q&A with the doc, and to get all the "welcome to being pregnant" information. Blood work normally isn't done that early unless they need to check for doubling hcg or progesterone levels for one reason or another.

Girl, go grab a FRER and put your mind at ease ;)
  • Yup, blood test is going to be just as accurate as FRER. They would take blood to measure whether your HCG doubled, but if there's no reason for them to be concerned, 8 weeks for a dating u/s is typical. Congrats!

My doctor ran a beta, but only because his test wasn't positive the day I went in (even though I had 4 positive tests). Normally he just tests in the office, if his test (normal pregnancy test) is positive, he doesn't run bloodwork to check beta levels.

That being said, he did have me do all the other prenatal bloodwork, but I was supposed to get that done before I got pregnant.
  • In the office I work at we don't see patients prior to 8 weeks or draw labs until later unless they are having issues
  • Hi bubblegum! Congrats. I didn't have my first appointment until 8 weeks. Unless you had a previous issue or were being treated by an RE, it's normal not to have any confirmation tests until your first appointment at 8-10 weeks. The waiting is horrible, and pretty much everyone thinks "am I really pregnant, is this real".

  • Thanks for all the feedback! Took the digital test this morning and seeing it say "pregnant" definitely helps! Who knows when it will really sink in though. I am having lunch with my mom tomorrow for her birthday and she will be the first person we are telling. No one even knows we have been trying so maybe finally telling someone will help!

I will only be 4 weeks tomorrow, but my mom is my #1 support behind my husband so I think it will be good to tell her even though it is early, (plus its her birthday and this will be her first grandbaby - which she wants more than anything - how awesome is that?) I can't wait!

  • Congrats on your BFP :) I remember you from the TTGP board!

I also didn't have any bloodwork and I thought it was weird, but my doctor's office said the same thing. Apparently insurance doesn't cover HCG testing unless you have a history of complications, or are having other problems. I just had my first appt yesterday (8w 5d) and it was just a lot of paperwork and questions, no labs at all. I'm going for my first ultrasound in a month at 12w 5d which is the NT scan and the first real "proof" I will have other than my HPTs. From what I've read on here, this is pretty standard so I'm not going to worry unless I have an actual reason to worry!

  • @Bubblegum5586 I will be 4 weeks tomorrow as well! I took a digital test Tuesday morning and it said pregnant, I took another one Wednesday morning to make sure and had the same result. I made an appointment for Jan. 16 with my doctor today. I will be 8 weeks. She said that is the normal time to come in for your first appointment.
I've decided to tell my immediate family Christmas Eve. I know that's still early, but we live out of the country so this will be the last time I see them for awhile. Glad to hear I'm not the only one sharing the news.
    Congrats to you!

  • @Bubblegum5586  My office doesn't do a first appointment until 10 weeks (anywhere between 6-10 weeks is pretty standard).  The only reason to come in earlier for a blood draw is a loss history so they can verify your betas are doubling, but you typically don't even meet with the doctor, just go straight to the lab for a blood draw and then leave.  The wait can kind of suck, but it really does go by pretty quickly.
  • I wasn't referred for bloodwork on my second pregnancy because the assumption was that everything was normal. It wasn't until I lost that pregnancy that my doctor ordered bloodwork for my subsequent pregnancies. If you are young and healthy, it's not really needed unless you're experiencing some concerning symptom...and honestly sometimes it can be a stressor in and of itself. People tend to fixate on those numbers and whether they are doubling. The waiting sucks, I totally agree, but there is very little you or your doctor could do even with blood test results.

    Good luck!
