3rd Trimester

Feeling dehydrated

Lately, I've been feeling really dehydrated with cotton mouth. I carry a 32 ounce water bottle with me religiously and drink 3-4 of them per day. I also drink about half a gallon of milk (been a huge craving of mine, I can't get enough!) and usually a small glass of juice or a few sips of soda to get my sugar fix. I still feel like I'm dehydrated though, I just can't drink enough. However, I can literally go to the bathroom, wash my hands, and then need to go again by the time I'm done. Is this normal?? Or should I speak to my doctor? So far, the only real problem I've had has been excessive heartburn.

Re: Feeling dehydrated

  • it's hard to say what's normal, as every pregnancy is different. if you're still feeling dehydrated, i would up the amount of water you're drinking. milk/juice/soda dont really do a whole lot for actually keeping you hydrated. if you want you can bring it up to your doctor, just to get some professional input.

Bring it up to your doc for sure. I drink at least 80-100 oz of water and was told I was dehydrated at my appointment (ketones in urine and I don't have GD).

Sweating along with frequent bathroom trips can really depleat you. If you drank a lot of water pre-pregnancy, I would definitely add at least 20 more ounces. It has helped me quite a bit.

  • What i've read is that if u are sufficiently hydrated, u will still feel the urge to drink. When u r dehydrated ur body surpresses ur urge to drink... Monitor ur urine colour, if its straw yellow colour that means ur sufficiently hydrated.

If its white then ur drinking too much. If its dark yellow-orange then ur dehydrated
  • Agreed. The sugars are not nearly as healthy as water. And there are better forms of calcium than milk. My OB told me to take calcium supplements because it will take quite a bit of milk to get to the recommended amount of calcium (I don't eat much dairy) and that's just unnecessary. But everyone is different.
  • I upped my water intake after talking to my doctor, but she said it was nothing to worry about. I don't drink the milk for the benefits, it's been my biggest craving!! I start to go into milk withdrawl if I don't have it, lol.
  • Iv been to see the midwife today and told her that I was always feeling dehydrated, she said it's totally normal during pregnancy because we're producing more blood or something along them lines, she said as long as your not getting light headed at the time it's fine.
  • Thirst is common in pregnancy, but it sounds to me like you are drinking plenty (a gallon and a half of liquid should be sufficient). If your doctor isn't concerned, then you are probably OK. Do be careful with drinking too much water, if consumed in excess it can be toxic. That said, milk is one of my biggest cravings, too! Whole milk. YUM.
