Doxycycline

Has anyone taken this for mastitis? I woke up in night with chills and aches and my right breast was very sore and tender. I pumped but no relief and still feel ill so I called and am being prescribed this. It isn't the horrible pain often described, but unlike I've experienced before.

I was told the medication is safe in breastfeeding, but also read it alters taste of milk. I am almost 'exclusively' pumping. Any input from those who have taken it is appreciated! Thanks!

I was put on cephalexin for mastitis (I just finished my antibiotics this past Sunday).

I also didn't have horrible breast pain, but the aches, chills, and fever came on extremely fast and my left breast was a little sore with one small area that was red. My flu-like symptoms went away within 24 hours of takings antibiotics and the clogged duct went away within 3 days (with lots of nursing, pumping, heat, and massage on that side).

Baby breastfed like usual and didn't seem to notice any difference, but I have a big baby who would probably eat anything put in front of him! He did, however, have very runny diapers while I was on the antibiotics (which the doctor warned me about).

I would highly recommend taking a probiotic while you're on the antibiotics (like Culturelle, one a day) and also giving baby a probiotic drop (I used Mommy's Bliss Probiotics). Antibiotics will also kill all the good bacteria in your gut and since you're breastfeeding, those effects pass on to baby and can lead to thrush which you definitely don't want! You should continue taking the probiotic for 30-60 days after you stop the antibiotics (whether you continue to give it to baby as well is up to you, but it basically provides double protection).

  • Also, since you're pumping, I would avoid freezing any of the extra milk you end up with since that milk will contain the antibiotics and you probably don't want to be feeding that to baby down the road. I ended up having to dump some of the milk I pumped since I had a lot since I was also pumping to help unclog the duct. Definitely not fun to see milk going down the drain, but I wanted baby to have the least exposure to the antibiotics as possible (even though they are safe).
  • I had to take it while trying to get pregnant. Make sure you drink a TON of water or it can burn your esophagus. Mine was burned and it was extremely painful!
  • Thank you for the advice!! I am taking a probiotic and I'm going to use some of my freezer stash so LO doesn't get all of medication. but I'm also sick with a cold (of course!) so I'm giving her some to get my antibodies. I'm going to pump and dump some as much as it kills me!

The flu like symptoms went away after I started meds and breast feels a little less sore.

The lack of sleep with growth spurt wore my body down!

    Thank you!!
  • I am on it now. Mastitis came out of nowhere and fast. So far I haven't had any side effects except for a headache. Not sure if that's related to the antibiotic or the cold that I have had for a week now.
  • I took it as well. Didn't notice any aversions from lo

  • Thanks! Mine hit out of nowhere as well and I'm also fighting cold so I hear ya! I've been given LO my pumped breast milk because I want her to get my antibodies since I'm sick. She doesn't seem affected by it. I hope you feel better soon!!

    Thank you!
