Solution to lipase in b-milk

For my first baby, I had found that the milk that I stored in the frig (2 days) or freezer (a few months) eventually had a sort of soapy/weird taste and that DS wouldn't drink it. Come to find out, it was because I have a large enough amount of enzyme in my b-milk called lipase which is meant to digest the lipids in milk, and the end result is a breakdown product that tastes like soap. Anywho...I was wondering if anyone else had this issue. I've read that scalding the milk stops the lipase activity, but I'd rather not do that if possible. Dr didn't really offer a solution other than that.

  • I've not heard of this. Maybe try contacting your local LLL and see if they have advice/solutions? I've had hit or miss advice from my doctor/OB/pediatrician in regards to breastfeeding issues/storage and have just gotten to the point of either doing a search on kellymom or through the LLL if I have issues.

  • Though I haven't personally had this issue, in my online breastfeeding group, they all agree to scald it prior to storage. But I agree with @Bombmom3 to contact a llc or someone from lll.
