1st Trimester

Doctor told me I was 8 weeks pregnant, but I only took a urine test?

Hi everyone! So I will be a first time mom and recently found out last week! I took 3 at home tests which were positive and then went to our OB coordinator on base that had me fill out some paperwork where I told them my last period was 11/12/15. I got a call back the next day from them stating that I was indeed pregnant (yay!) and 8 weeks and a day along with my due date July18th, 2016, and they scheduled an appointment for me this week for blood work and family history. Tomorrow according to them I should be 9 weeks along. What I am confused by is how can they can tell how far along I am when I only took a urine test and listed my last period as 11/12/13 (when I asked about this on the phone they said it could have been implantation bleeding...)?

  • I'm confused by their math...or maybe I'm no good with math this morning? Based on your LMP, you would be just shy of 5 weeks. Are you sure they didn't think October?

  • they are just approximating for now-- they will change the EDD when you have your first US. However, their math is off by an entire month so I'm not sure what's up with that.
  • Maybe they did think it was October? But when they called to confirm the pregnancy after the urine test I mentioned that I had my period last month and the lady just repeated that I was due July 18th...I think they're wrong and I am just shy of 5 weeks like you said. I have an appointment tomorrow for blood work and will ask them then as well, it's just unsettling to me and I think if that's the case I may want to look elsewhere for a doctor. I'd just rather have someone that really knows what they're talking about.

I wouldn't go that far at this point. I would simply let them get you scheduled for an ultrasound. You will know how far along you are when you get there. Switching doctors over general medical standards is an over reaction. Simmer down and be patient.

I don't think she's impatient about waiting for an ultrasound...of course that will be more accurate, but it would also concern me if the person I was trusting to guide me in my pregnancy couldn't perform simple math based on a LMP.

  • They could also be making that guess off of your HCG level maybe?
  • Love when I can use this...

They can't know HCG levels without a blood test and she only took a urine test. Also, as HCG levels vary so greatly, you can't really date a pregnancy that way. My guess is they mistook your first day of your last period. I am 8 weeks today (confirmed by a dating ultrasound) and I started my last period on October 19. Regular cycles. I'm sure when you mention the math to them they will realize their mistake and correct it, no worries. Good luck!!

Concerned-- yes, but humans are human. I wouldn't be switching my provider based on ONE incident of bad math. Especially over the phone. If the mishaps were consistent, then yeah. Pick up and find another doctor. I just think this is an over reaction based on one interaction.

  • Yea, they messed up the math. My LMP was 10/13/14 and my EDD was 7/20/15. You should be due in August.

I wouldn't get all upset about switching providers over a math mistake. It happens. They probably just misread the date on your form. If they're using the wheel thing that estimates the due date it's as simple as not ticking the month over. It happens. I got to my 30 week appointment and my OB said, 'Only 4 weeks to go!' because she didn't reset part of the wheel. She's an amazing OB and I wouldn't switch her for the world, especially not over a tiny mistake. Ask to confirm when you go for your bloodwork and they'll likely correct your EDD.

The bolded is what concerns me. She brought up the math mistake and then they mention implantation bleeding?

Like pp said, your due date should be mid august. Hopefully, you'll get a dating ultrasound to confirm.
