Non-Stress test fun

I'm approaching 37 weeks, and I've been ordered by my doctor to get twice-weekly non-stress tests.
This doesn't worry me--I know it's routine for high-risk pregnancy, but my baby girl is being difficult when we get in there!

This little stinker is SOOOO active, until I get in there, and then it's snooze time! Today, I took extra measures. I had a big breakfast of bacon and eggs and french toast (with an iced tea--caffeine!) thinking that would get her moving. Nope. Apparently somebody wanted to sleep in! They came in and buzzed my stomach, and then left me for another 10 minutes. NOTHING!
They gave me apple juice, and still nothing! Here was another attempt to buzz her awake.
I finally as a last resort pulled up spotify on my phone and stuck it against my belly with some up-tempo Christmas music. 10 minutes later, they let me go!
Next time, I'm starting with that tactic.

  • It looks kind of like one of those things that they look into your ear with, but they put it on your stomach, push a button. It has an audible buzz (kind of like the buzzer from the game taboo) and it vibrates a little.
  • Interesting I've had almost 50 NST and never had this done when baby is being difficult. It's normally just juice. Which now I have a fun size candy bar beforehand.

  • My NST tech just used two of her fingers and shook my belly for a long time. Uncomfortable and awkward. I did it to my husband when I got home to show him how it felt. He made an uncomfortable snort/laugh and said, " thanks for letting me experience that". I said in a sweet voice with a sweet smile, "Sure, it's your baby too so you should be able to experience as much of this as possible".
  • @saraellenM I think if my tech did that, I would probably reach up and slap her. You're much more tolerant than I would have been!
  • I've had multiple NST done with this pg and my last and had that done. But whatever works. this baby has been a little uncooperative the past couple. I start with juice right away and sometimes that helps wake him up.
  • That's a good tip! I've had to get twice weekly ones since 27 weeks. Usually baby is active but the past couple of times she's been awake three hours before and then nothing for the appointment. I'll have to remember the Christmas music!
  • Mine has the opposite problem, she's often too active! I've had to repeat more than one. So frustrating!

  • I found that if I eat a protein rich breakfast an hour before my apt that he is active as crazy. But that's just how he is. I've learned how to get him going. In the morning he normally isn't very active. This was the only way for me to get him going.
  • Are your appointments at the same time each week? If so, can you switch it up. I haven't had a NST but when I had an ultrasound last time even though it was normally during baby's sleep time, I had a chocolate protein bar beforehand and baby was CRAZY. Sometimes when I eat a lot of food like a big breakfast it puts her to sleep.
