Hypothyroid and pregnancy

I have Hypothyroid for 10 years now. I was on synthroid for 8-9 years.. I hated it and I was miserable. I was switched to armour at the beginning of this year and I am in LOVE with it. But my OBGYN wants me back to sythyroid. I don't see how making me miserable is going to help my baby. I mean I ate non stop and gained well over 20 lbs on sythyroid. How would me being well over 200lbs in my third trimester later help my child??? I have done a little research and saw that many doctors do this but with no explanation. I have also seen where some doctors rather their patients on armour. Anyone else in this situation? I am already (its been 2 weeks) gaining weight, always hungry, always tired and my hear is having palpitations again.

Re: Hypothyroid and pregnancy

  • I'm sorry you're going through this! I'm on synthroid but a pretty lose dose, I think. It's 25mg per day. I have only been on it for about 8 months but haven't noticed any side effects (likely due to the low dose). How much are you taking? Have you talked to your OB about why you need to make the switch? My doctor told me that the anxiety-like side effects are usually from being on too much. I know it's terrible, but did your doctor say you could go back to armour once your pregnancy is done? I was thinking that maybe synthroid is just safer during pregnancy but you mentioned that some doctors prefer that one. Maybe your doctor isn't understanding how great your side effects are? It could be good to have the "do the benefits outweigh the risks?" conversation, since it sounds like they do! I'm sorry I don't have more answers for you, but I hope they can help you resolve this soon!

  • Did you ask them why they want you back on synthroid? If they know of your issues with it and still want you back on it there should be a valid reason. I know thyroid function can get screwy during pregnancy, maybe synthroid is easier to adjust to get optimal thyroid function with all the crazy hormones? I'd say if you haven't, ask them why they want you on synthroid and go from there.
  • My doctor actually switched me from synthroid to armour.  I have never had it before but it seems to be working find.  I wasn't really sure why he changed it he just said he wanted me off the synthetic.  I thought it might be because I'm such high risk but it sounds like a few other doctors are doing it as well.

I sure hope you start feeling better.  I'm with PP I would ask him for an explanation and let him know how bad you are feeling now.

Please post an update if you get an explanation.

  • Both of them are pregnancy category A, so I'm surprised by the switch.  Specifically with thyroid hormone and seizure meds, we try not to change patients from brand to generic (or one generic to another) since they are not always bioequivalent.  I would ask the doctor for the reasoning behind the switch.  It may just be the doctor's personal preference, but they would be willing to change it if you explained your preference.
  • Me me! I could almost write this. 11 years hypo and I was on synthroid/levo until April of 2014 and now I'm on 4 grains armor. I love it so much. I was off meds for a while prior to getting pregnant so my levels haven't regulated since getting back on them. It's a huge struggle
  • Also if you're having palpatations already your levels are off. Definitely go talk to your doctor. Armor just makes you FEEL better doesn't it? And it's natural!
  • I have palpation when mine is too low, and short of breath. My dr put me on armour for like a month but my body wasn't absorbing it so he switched me back quickly.
  • It may be that there's much more collective experience and research treating pregnant women with synthroid over the decades.  It looks like armour is newer (seems to be only brand name, so assuming it's still under patent).  Synthroid has been around for many decades, hence more literature & collective knowledge so they may be more comfortable.  However, if it's really not working for you, I'd have the discussion.
  • I'm on 50mg a day. Not to high. I have not been raised in years. I have a doc that just goes off of TSH but I really like her so it's hard for me to switch. She was all on board when I wanted armour. I feel 100 times better on armour than synthyroid. I'll be talking to my doctor. Idk if I can wait until Jan 5th and my 16 week appointment. I have been thinking I was to low for years and that's why I asked for the switch. When she did switch me the heart palpaptations stopped. If I remember our conversations right it's doctor preference. My Ob does not like women on armour during pregnancy. But I will be asking why. I have a right to know. And making me feel horrible during pregnancy seems to be much worse than using an all natural aproach to medicine. I mean I'm not a doctor but if I'm suffering I would think the baby is too

  • I've been on synthroid/Levo since 2005 when I had to have my thyroid removed. I've never really had issues with it making me feel bad unless my levels were off and of course had to have my dose increased with both previous pregnancies. At last check I was fine, but now I'm 13wks and starting to feel the effects of low TSH. I've heard about the natural stuff and figured it would be safe in pregnancy. If it makes you feel better, I'd fight for it as long as theres no reason for you not to be on it. I'm tempted to ask my OB about and see if I notice any difference. Good luck! :)

  • I was put on synthroid when I got pregnant. My midwife said my levels would be fine if I weren't pregnant. I can't tell if something is pregnancy symptoms or medication related but I HATE HATE HATE waiting a half hour to eat something, especially because I wake up nauseas.

I would ask to switch back to the other medicine if you had less symptoms with that brand. Good luck!
