What is wrong with this child???!

So im sitting here hiding in the bathroom in tears. For the past week LO has been sooo fussy. I cant ever put her down. The second she falls asleep and i try to put her down shes screaming.
She always seems uncomfortable, pedi didnt want to put her on reflux meds. She eats anywhere from 2-4oz every 2 hours and apirs up every time. Shes on gas drops before bottles and similac spit up. And lately ive had a hard time burping her.
I would just love to be able to feed her and set her down do i can get something done around here.
And its just during the day. When i get her down for the night, shes been fine. I dont know whats wrong!!!
If this formula isnt making a difference id rather not spend 28$ a can when i can get other stuff that does the same.
Shes 10 weeks old today. Anyone have any suggestions??

  • Sounds exactly like what I went through with my LO. We found out she had reflux. She was put on liquid medicine and it has helped immensely! She is also on gripe water to help with unsettled stomach. Now she is perfectly back to normal, taking naps during the day and being a happy child.

  • How often do you give the gripe water? Im def going to call the pedi. And ask about reflux meds. I cant take it anymore!
  • What other symptoms do you notice with feeding ? Does she cry in the middle of feeding, after feeding. Does she arch her back or look to the side when you try to burp her afterwards ? She might have silent reflux even. I would call you peds and talk to them about this. She may not need a different formula but rather a thicker formula like AR if she indeed has reflux.
Try doing has drops before the feeds which may help with gas.
  • She fusses the whole time feeding and arches her back and fights. Im using the similac spit up which has the added rice starch. And at first it worked really well but now it doesnt seem to do anything. The ped said that because she was gaining weight well she dodnt want to do meds.

Maybe try mommy bliss probiotic drops they have worked wonders for my little man he had silent reflux and hasn't had it since I started the drops. They are a little pricey but target sells them and buy buy baby

Why doesn't your pediatrician want her on reflux meds? That sounds exactly how my son was before he was put on Zantac. I'd definitely call and say you want her on meds.

EDIT: I read why your ped doesn't want her on meds, and to me that makes no sense. Medication won't affect her weight gain.
  • If it helps we are using the AR formula for reflux too and target brand up and up has an AR formula for like half the price. This is what we use.
  • Pedi said that since shes gaining weight the reflux isnt affecting her too much. And to be honest it wasnt as bad when we went a few weeks ago. She's definitely gotten fussier the last week and a half.
Im tempted to switch to the target brand ar formula. I noticed it doesnt have cornsyrup as the main ingredient as similac spit up does.
As far as probiotics, do you give it once a day? Im definately willing to spend the money if it helps her.
  • Im just tired :( shes always been a pretty high maintenence baby, but so much more so this last week and a half.
  • Well my baby was gaining weight very well but started to hate the experience of bottle feeding that she stopped drinking the whole bottle and had an appt yesterday for shots and dropped in her weight percentile ... In my opinion u don't wanna wait until that happens and I hate that she now struggles with the bottle and is associating it with a negative experience. We increase the medication dosage and she seems to be doing a little bit better today
  • We also were told to add rice cereal to her formula... They said with every feed but we only do it with the nighttime feeds

The probiotic you give once a day, it took about a week to see a difference cause the probiotics had to build up. You can add it to a bottle or put directly in the mouth which is what I do and give him his bottle after. At buy buy baby you can use a coupon on it if you have one and it's a few dollars cheaper than target but I feel for the difference it gave my little man is worth it.
  • Thanks so much! Im definitely getting some tomorrow!
  • I'm pretty sure my LO has reflux too and he sounds similar. The gripe water helps him the best. The first ingredient is baking soda which is a natural antacid. But my LO isn't gaining weight really well. He went from the 50th% at birth to the 25th at his one month and now he is 8 weeks at the 15th. I'm not sure if that is bad??? I weigh him at home and don't see the doctor till next week.
  • To add to previous posters- my LO was hard to burp as well- a couple things that have worked for him:
Sit her on your leg facing sideways and hold her cheeks for head support and pat the back, also, hold her on your knee facing away from you, again, hold her cheeks for head support and roll baby in a wide circle around and me doing these two positions alternating has helped me get good burps from baby. Good luck
  • I too agree with pp on the mommy bliss probiotic. Did such a wonder with my little man. I give it too him in the morning as he first wakes up directly with a dose of gas drops because it tends to hit him all at once but it honestly is great!

I'm in the same boat with my LO. We are on reflux medication 2x a day, gas drops before feelings, and gripe water before bed at night. And we also switched to Similac alimentum and it has made a world of difference. I would def get some and try it out. It's pricey, but if it works out you should be able to get a prescription and have it covered by your insurance.

Eta: I spend a lot of days crying in the bathroom too Bc she just won't stop crying, but this has all helped a lot.
  • Sounds just like my DD1. Do you use a baby carrier at all? This will allow you to have some free hands and help calm her stomach and keep her upright if it is reflux. With DD1 I tried every similac brand of formula and then switched to enfamil AR which worked so much better (even though similac spit up was similar). That brand just worked better for her. I did try to switch her to the generic target brand version but she didn't like it as much so we just stuck with what worked.
Good luck and know this will be a stage she will grow out of!
  • Thanks for all the encouragement! Its funny because we can be out and about all day and shes a perfect angel. But when were home shes the spawn of the devil!
She didnt seem to like the carriers i have but ive only tried once. I have a moby (that i hate) a baby katan, a ring sling and regular old preformed buckle one.
Tomorrow i will get the probiotics. Right now shes sleeping in her crib. I added a tsp if rice ceral to her bottle and gave herbgas drops before. Well see if it helps.
Although shes usually fine throughout the night. Eitherway..fingers crossed.
Thank you for all the advice! I will try it all!!
  • I use a Tula baby carrier with infant insert that LO loves to be in. She has reflux as well and it lets her be upright without being all squished. I'm not sure if you use powder but when we switched from Similac Sensitive to Gerber Gentle we went from using ready to feed to powder (powder was all the store had in Gerber). we tried all the techniques imaginable for reflux and had so many endless nights filled with crying. It was so hard to see her like that and not be able to help. Finally I realized maybe it was the powder, and we switched back to ready to feed (went to a different store). Pediatrician swears there's no difference but the RTF is definitely thicker than the powder/water.

This sounds exactly like my baby!!!! I didn't even think it could be a reflux she is ebf but does the same things abd is never content after feedings but won't eat anymore. During the night she sleeps perfectly but during the day she is the fussiest ever !
  • @chein1 both my pediatrician and the GI doctor we went to see said there is definitely a difference between the powder and ready to feed!
  • @trishee13 wtf am I seeing some sort of quack?! Haha
  • We went through the same thing! We are now in reflux meds and similac alimentum. The formula is expensive but works and a happy baby and mommy is priceless!
  • See i feel the rtf formula is thinner! I just got probiotic drops today and will start that in the am. Today ive been adding rice cereal to her formula. she seems a little better hut its hard to judge as we were out running errands all day and she loves the car and carriage. So later this evening will be the true test when shes awake and were home!
I just got the target brand formula as well and am going to try to slowly switch her over to that.
  • Hahah @chein1 is your pedi younger? My only guess is mine are "old school" but yeah they both told me, separately, to try the rtf for my LO's reflux!
  • @trishee13 I wonder if it has to do with the bubbles. Rtf is much smoother and settled.

It will pass! Mine went through this at 10 weeks. She's 13 weeks now and back to her normal baby self!

She's spitting up less, way less gassy in general, and no longer sensitive to any foods I eat! She has a tough time napping by herself during the day because we only swaddle at night and I would rather get 8 hours at night than have her take a 4 hour nap during the day!
  • @KristynLee15 no since its premixed its heavier and more uniform.. not like the powder you are trying to mix on your own. Plus you still have to shake up the bottle of rtf and get bubbles. But I still prefer the powder! I just think it's easier.
  • @chein1 I know that as far as alimentum is concerned the ingredients are not the same from power to ready to feed. The ready to feed is corn free... So how could they be the same?
