GTKY: family size

I've noticed a big verity in the number of kids that people think is "a lot" so I thought it would be fun to share our views, and why we think the way we do. So, how many kids would you consider to be "a lot". In other words, when would you think "wow, that's a big family!"

Re: GTKY: family size

  • For me it's 5. 4 is kind of big, but 5 makes me think "wow, I could never have that many"

  • I come from a fairly large family and know a lot of families with 4+ kids. We plan on having four. My mom is one of five and 3 out of 4 grands had 10 siblings (or more). My husband and i both have one sibling lol.

I also voted 5. When I see someone with that many kids I wonder how they manage it. With that said though to each their own. You have as many babies as you see fit. It's not my place to judge you for that decision.

  • I said 6. I'm the 7th (and last) in my family and we were definitely always seen as a huge family. A few of my siblings have gone for large families: One sister has 5, another has 6 (1 is a stepchild, but 5 are biologically hers), another has 4. I will be plenty happy with 2! I don't really want to be out-numbered, lol.

My husband's mother is the oldest of 13...so our family gatherings on both sides are completely out of control.
  • I also voted 5. I just feel like it's not as common to see a family of 5 kids anymore, & whenever I do I definitely think, "wow!" Not in a bad way by any means. That's just my view of a bigger family.

  • I originally wanted 5 so anything over that is a lot to me.  Obviously, I'm lucky with our first on the way.

  • 4 or 5 is large in my mind. My husband is the oldest of 7 and he had to be talked into a 3rd, the only reason he agreed to a 3rd was because our 1st pregnancy was twins lol
  • I come from a family with 4 kids and never felt big. To me 7 seems like a stretch. I start to wonder about transportation and having to share rooms. :) To be fair, I'm very much a more the merrier person, I begged my mom to have more kids (she had her tubes cut and tied, wanted nothing to do with it lol!)
  • We had 5 in my house at one time (Dad had 2 older kids that didn't live with us) but I voted 6. When we all get together to take pictures or something I'm just like, damn. That's a lot of people. Haha.
  • I'm one of 4, so that seems normal to me, but 5 seems like the tipping point in my opinion to be considered a bigger family... DH is one of 2, so he wants 2 kids, which always seemed so small to me, we agreed on 3!

  • I come from a family of 2's. I'm one of two. My parents are both one of two. Even all 4 of my grandparents were one of two. My sister has two kids. Both of my aunts have two kids, and all four of my cousins either have two kids or no kids. My mother once said she thought it seemed right because they were essentially "replacing" themselves, and that sort of resonates with me. It's actually quite strange how no one has deviated from this pattern! I always wanted 2, but I may be the weirdo who only has one, considering I'm 38 with #1 and I have no idea how much more life my ovaries have left. 3 seems like more than I'd want, but it's not a crazy stretch. 4, on the other hand, seems HUGE to me.

    BFP #3 12/17/17 EDD 8/25/18. It's a boy!
  • 5 is the number where I start to think wow, she's brave! 3-4 is definitely not small in my opinion, but it's not shocking either.

  • 5 is the tipping point to be a big family in my mind. Ideally I'd love to have four.
  • I picked 4, mainly because I'm having baby #4, and not sure how I'm going to manage all these boys!
    BFP 5/2/11 DS born 1/19/12.
    BFP #2 12/29/12, EDD 9/6/13, MC 1/2/13.
    BFP #3 5/4/13, EDD 1/9/14  Twin Boys! L&L born 12/18/13
    BFP #4 10/10/15 - Surprise!  Boy #4!.  EDD 6/19/16

  • I'm slightly confused as to whether the poll is total family size or just kids.

I voted 7 family size is large because we will be 6.  :)

My family was 6 and H's was 5 so it feels normal but on the big side for today's standards.
DS 9/2/13 was a BFP from an IUI!
Triplets due 6/29/16 also from an IUI!

  • I said 6, because this is baby#4 for us and we're not completely against one more(although I think we will be done after this one), but any more than 5 would seem overwhelming for me.
Although this poll doesn't portray how people act when they see someone with 3 kids out and about, lol. "You've got your hands full!", "Are they all yours?", etc.....

  • I'm youngest of 4 so that always seemed pretty normal to me. When I see family photos and I have to take a moment to count all of the kids I find myself impressed when there are 5 or more. Like, damn! Good for you! Especially when they are all close in age.
  • My Dad is one of ten...my response was 4. I agree with @fishwife799 though...you do you. I think we'll probably stop at 2.

  • I am from a family of 6. I have three brothers. People always commented on how big of a family we have but I didn't think so. One more kid though and it would've been a mad house. I'm going with 5.

  • I used to want five when I idealistically believed I'd marry in my 20s and make huge piles of money and love being pregnant. Instead I got married at 32, make only reasonable piles of money, and apparently am destined to be nauseated all the time when I am pregnant. Five still sounds fun, but only if the next three can be adopted along with a way bigger house and lots of free time/unlimited income.

  • I think up to four is "normal," and more than that is a lot! But, I love large families... I am just personally way fine with stopping now at number four.
