Low Progesterone, anyone?

Hi Ladies :)
I received my beta test results, and the nurse I spoke to said they look beautiful.  Everything is rising (she did not provide specific numbers), which is super amazing!  But, she asked if anyone had prescribed me progesterone.  I said "no, I have no idea what you are talking about".  Apparently my level is a 12, and they would like it to be an 18.  She also scheduled me for an u/s on Monday (I will be 6w/4d). Has anyone had low levels like this?  Did supplements or suppositories help? My understanding, thank you Google, is that this is considered to be a cause of miscarriage, so I assume the supplement is precautionary...

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Low Progesterone, anyone?

  • Low P is bad.  Suppositories will help increase it.  Your placenta should start producing it starting the 2ndTri.  If not, you can stay on them your entire pregnancy.  The side effects suck.  They make me super sleepy.  Nothing bad comes of extra P (just crappy side effects).

  • I was just prescribed a pill form of it today. Like I need to be more drowsy than I already am. Hormones.
  • I take progesterone suppository because my level was 1.5. Ooops. I have no side effects and it works great!! Well, I did when I took it orally and it did not work very well but when I switched to vaginal, it worked great and the side effects vanished.

  • I had been spotting when I got my BFP and knew I usually have low progesterone so I had a level drawn as soon as I got my BFP and it was 7-something. They put me on the vaginal supplement. Haven't re-checked a level but the spotting is slightly better (still comes and goes).

I had low progesterone with my first baby and started suppositories at 5 weeks. She was born happy and healthy! I am only
About 3 weeks right now and called my OB today and they told me to go get a blood test ASAP at the hospital because they will start me on them as early as tomorrow if my P level is low again, I find out results tomorrow!

  • I'm on the pill form at night...no bleeding so I assume it's working...I have an appt on the 23rd.
  • I have lower progesterone as well. I chart using the Creighton Model and spot before and after my period every time. I first got tested at 4 weeks. Thankfully, it was at 19, which was pretty good. I've been on progesterone oil injections for two weeks now and have made it up to 38. My doctor has decided to take me off injections and put me on vaginal suppositories since it's so much higher. I hope it all works for you as well! The injections started to leave me feeling pretty sore, so I'm happy I get to switch now.

I've been on the pill form (200mg) for almost a week now. I take it at night. I think it makes me sleepy but that's fine since I'm asleep anyway! I have my first appt 12/23 (same as you @Sabrina000216 !) and I'm assuming they will test me again then! I don't know what my exact number was all the nurse said was "a little low" and didn't seem super concerned.

They checked my progesterone with this pregnancy after I had a loss in October and it was at 11.6 so I've been on prmetrium (progesterone pills) since 4w. I haven't noticed any side effects or anything, and they haven't checked my progesterone level yet since being on the meds. I too have my appointment on December 23rd - must be a good day for appointments!! Best wishes to all. :)

  • What day was your level 18? I had my first blood test yesterday at exactly 4 weeks and my progesterone was a 17. The nurse said that is high enough to support a pregnancy, but I started progesterone and they want me to stay on it because you can never have to much ( her exact words).. we're you further than 4 weeks when yours was an 18? Anyways I have learned so far that it can't hurt so I am doing it until they see a,heartbeat or as long as I feel comfortable.
  • Update :)

I went for my u/s and check-in yesterday.  Our little buddy has a strong heartbeat and is measuring 6w/2d (so really close to what we thought).  They said everything looked really great.  Such a relief.

Perhaps strange, perhaps not...The practitioner said I could stop taking the progesterone since they saw a heartbeat - which means the placenta (is that right?) has taken over for the progesterone production.  My doctor had prescribed it through 12 weeks.  I was a little confused that they would take me off of it since they have not measured for an increase in levels. She said I could continue taking it, since it's not "hurting" anything, so I am.  Am I overly worrying?  Would you continue to take it?

    Thanks all :)
