Jenny Lind Crib circa 1987-safe?

I'm due in May and plan to use my childhood crib for the baby. She will probably stay in a bassinet at first, but ultimately I'd really like to use my crib. Does anyone know if a crib this old would fit safety standards for today? I wasn't even concerned about it but when people find out my plans, they've been telling me to make sure.

  • NO! This is the crib I plan on getting too, but Ill be getting the most recent one.
Not only have safety regulations changed in terms of the crib slates, but the paint might contain lead if its that old.
I know you want to use it for sentamental reasons, but I would highly suggest spending the $200 that this crib retails for and getting a more current model.

  • I was only going to use it to save money, to be very honest. I'm not heart broken if I can't use my childhood crib. Thanks so much for the input!
  • Almost everyone sells this crib...so if you hit a sale, you will get this crib for a steal.

  • I might just do that..I love the look of a Jenny Lind! And they are cheaper than I originally thought.
  • NO! Not safe!

We were given a drop side crib from my aunt when I was pregnant with my first. I was so excited to check that off my list and for free, but after a few weeks of research I decided to not use it. Wasn't worth the risk. Trust me, when you have a new baby you are mostly likely worried about anything and everything! Might as well not add an iffy crib to your worry list.

Yes! After I decided to get a different crib I checked out our local Buy/Sell/Trade FB page and scored a 1 year old crib & mattress for $40.

  • -measure the distance between the crib slats to see if it meets the new standards.

-you can fix the crib so it no longer has drop sides

-most things made after the early 70s no longer have lead paint

  • You might be able to modify it so it's safe. We had a drop side crib with our first, my husband just added a screw so that the sides no longer dropped down.
  • I actually have seen this crib on Craigslist quite a bit too if you really want to save some money. But otherwise it's a great price at the stores! I definitely wouldn't use a crib that was more than a few years old!

We're doing the same thing. The crib were getting was used by my husband, his brother, and his brothers son. It's wood finished so no lead and my BIL never had an issue with the spacing. It has a drop side but I plan on using it while we're all co-sleeping (push the drop side to the side with my bed and leave it down for easy access) and then screwing it in place when/if we move to their own room while they're in crib stage.
