Weight Gain too fast?

I found out I was pregnant at 8 wks, Week 10 appointment I gained 1 lb, no biggie. I have no morning sickness.  Jump to week 12 and I gain 4 lbs? OMG my doctor is not worried and says she allows a 10lb gain before 20 weeks but it's all me and I will have to loose it after baby comes! I was over weight to start. it seems kinda fast so I have 5 lbs and 8 weeks. at the rate I am going I will exceed that. Am I being to worried? I do not want to get gestional diabetes. :(

  • I am right there with you. I just can't stop stuffing my face. Gotta get it in check. (Talking to myself) :)

  • i would say you're being too worried.
i dont know what will happen for you, but for me i gained weight rapidly at the beginning of my pregnancy, & then it completely stopped until about weeks 21-22. now I'm slowly gaining weight again as baby gets bigger & bigger.

if your doctor isn't worried, i wouldn't be either. go for walks & make sure you're eating healthy.
  • you may have just gained 4 lbs of water weight/bloat from all the hormonal changes. If you keep gaining at that weight it might be an issue but from what you described the panic may be a bit premature.

  • A good portion of what you gain over the course of your pregnancy will be baby, fluids, extra blood etc. Remember that stuff leaves you after you have the baby. Every person is different and if your doctor isn't concerned, you don't need to be either.

IF you feel like there's a preventable reason that you're gaining so much weight (like eating tons of fast food etc) then that's a different story.

I wonder this every day, I'm 14+4 days preg FTM with twins and I've gained 10 lbs. I Dont now what's normal to gain. each pregnancy is different. But my uterus is already measuring an inch over my belly button so I am assuming it's fluids due to hormones! Best of luck !
  • Bloat and constipation could be the culprit. I wouldn't worry unless your doctor is. Even if you do have a few more pounds to lose after baby is born, who cares. Your baby certainly won't. Just do the best you can to eat right and keep moving.

  • I personally gain 10 almost instantly & then I gain slowly after 12 weeks... I guess for me I thought it was hormonal. I am very hungry so I'm trying to be conscious of what I'm eating but I am eating. I know the weeks of nausea to come will be a lot less appetizing. I personally am not overweight but I do agree, the instant 10 I gain, is the same 10 I'll need to lose after baby is born. Gestational diabetes is not something I know too much about but your dr can help calm your nerves & make suggestions for you as well I'm sure!

  • You do not get gestational diabetes from gaining too much weigh during pregnancy. Girls that gain the suggested amount of weight can get gestational diabetes.

  • 5lbs? I put on 15 lbs in November (weeks 6, 7, 8, 9). Most of that is in my boobs.
  • I so think my boobs gained most of it. i'm up 2 cup sizes already.

  • If your Doctor isn't worried, then I wouldn't be.  Your Doctor is going to tell you whether or not there are any concerns you see, so the fact she didn't seem to show any worry with your situation should put your mind at ease.
Pregnancy is not a diet, but it also isn't an excuse to do or eat whatever you want.
While there is a healthy, recommended, weight range you should be gaining, I wouldn't put so much stress on it, because it does stress out the baby as well.
I know it's difficult to see the scale go up and realize that after the baby is born, it's time to try and start losing the weight, but your body will pack on the weight it needs to help support your growing baby.
Try to enjoy pregnancy, and don't sweat the small stuff.

  • If ur doc isn't concerned then you shouldn't be. I gained almost 10lb by 12 weeks but I've only gained 2 pounds total in weeks 12-18 so it's evened out a lot for me
  • I - boom- gained 10 lbs right around when I found out. I was wondering what was going on, and assumed it was AF bloating. I've lost 4lbs since then, because of food aversions and vomiting. (and honestly, some of it was probably bloat due to hormonal changes)

A lot of it is water retention, poop & gas. If your doctor isn't concerned then I wouldn't get worked up about it just yet.

Correct. I've known marathon runners that eat cleanly. They barely gained & had GD. It has to do with how your placenta functions.
