TTC After a Loss

So confusing, help?

So four weeks ago I had my 12 week scan to find that baby had stopped developing at around 2/3 weeks. The following Monday I opted for cytotec tablets and passed everything by Tuesday. 3 weeks later I'm showing positive tests, would hcg still be showing where I lost baby so early? is this a new pregnancy? Will test again in 5 days but if anyone has any thoughts or advice it would be much appreciated, I'm going out of my mind. X

  • Your doctor will be able to answer this question better than we can. Call and have them do a blood draw.

  • It can take weeks for HCG to come down.  It took me 4 weeks to go from HCG of 600 to zero.  I'm guessing your HCG was much higher than mine, since I was only 6 weeks along, so it wouldn't be crazy for it to take longer.  Most doctors monitor levels every 1-2 weeks until zero, but I have heard that some doctors don't bother with the monitoring.  You should call your doctor's office and clarify what they want you to be doing - ie, should you be preventing pregnancy while waiting for it go to zero?  When should you come in for more lab work?  When can you start trying again?

Of course, if you ovulated, then you could be pregnant again if you weren't preventing pregnancy, but only your doctor can help you figure that out by getting an actual HCG level.
  • I was only about 2 weeks pregnant when it stopped developing which is what is confusing me, it seems to be taking a long time to leave my system. I have no idea what the next step is so will be calling them again today. The days are dragging. X
  • I agree with @penelope4612 - I lost my baby 8 weeks ago and still have HCG hanging on at 11... Granted my cycles have restarted now and I've been given the all clear to TTC; but my doctor follows my levels and brought me back in last week for another ultrasound just to make sure everything was gone. I would definitely see if they can do blood work - sometimes the results can be all you need to stop stressing.

  • Hi guys, went to the doctor, they have said they won't do blood work or ultrasound and I should just act as if I am pregnant eg don't drink l, eat healthy etc then test after Xmas. Thanks for your help xx
  • I recommend finding a new doctor. Someone who cares about you. I wasn't there to hear the conversation but it sounds very dismissive.
  • I agree, that response seems odd to me. 2 blood draws should answer the question of whether this is residual hcg or a new pregnancy. Also, most OBs seem to follow your hcg down (at least from what I've experienced and heard here from others) in order to make sure you've passed all the products of conception. So telling you to act like you're pregnant and test again in a few weeks seems kind of lazy and cruel.
  • I am 3 weeks post miscarriage and my hcg was still present in my most recent blood draw, but numbers are definitely coming down.    I agree with others that it seems cruel for them to just tell you to wait it out through the holidays and retest in a few weeks and go about as if you are pregnant.  Can you call back and tell them you'd like a pregnancy blood test and hcg levels done?
  • I agree with PP, it seems like they don't care and are being lazy. It also seems irresponsible - if you haven't passed all the products of conception you run the risk of getting a uterine infection which can really hurt your chances at conceiving again. I would either change doctors or tell your current doctor that you're uncomfortable with the level of care and you want to be checked out more thoroughly.

  • Unfortunately I am in the uk and I believe healthcare is very different here. He told me that even if he were to do bloods it can't be done till after Christmas. Thank you so much for the support xx
  • If you start getting a fever, seek attn. May you be healthy and fingers crossed that you receive good news after Christmas.
  • *Lurker from PGAL* I've had 1mc and 2 mmc and I would not accept healthcare like this. I'm in Norway (think healthcare here is maybe more similar?). With both of my mmc I've had a follow up us to check for any remaining tissue. I also did bloodtest with the last mmc. The bloodtest for hcg are quickly done (usually you get the answer the next day if they need to send it to a lab) and really it should be possible to do them before Christmas. Also if you get a fever get to the ER ASAP!
