Hi ladies as my Little guy nears 4 months old I've been trying to decide when I wanna start him on rice cereal and puréed fruits and veggies. Just wondering what everyone else was thinking.

Re: When will you start rice cereal/ puréed foods?

  • I'm starting when my pediatrician tells me to... Probably around 6 mos. I'm EPing and unless here's a supply problem down the road, that's all he's getting til then.
  • Loading the player...
  • Never  . I have never bought baby food, and DD1 is 3yo tomorrow. I plan to do baby led weaning (finger foods from the table) again, starting at 6 months.

  • I'll start between 4 and 6 months with my pediatrician's okay and when LO shows signs. With my first I tried BLW and still like a lot of the ideas but DS1 had a weird texture aversion. He wouldn't do any finger foods until after his first birthday because of it.
  • I'm not doing rice cereal at all. But I'm thinking I'll start puréed around 4-6 months. Will check with my doctor first though!
  • I'll be doing baby led weaning starting at 6 months. Maybe start to give her some random tastes of things after 4 months. But like PP said, no rice cereal as it is nothing but empty calories.
  • Skipping rice cereal and will go with purées at 4mo. DD already reaches for food and moves her mouth when we're eating. DH let her lick a banana the other day and she went nuts!

  • no matter how excited I am to start feeding him real food, I'm going to wait until I get the okay from the doctor and she says 6 months. DH and I both have stomach problems so I can't risk giving food earlier
  • We will wait until 6 months or after and will do baby led weaning as well. We have a lot of food allergy kiddos so we will wait.
  • We are going to start at 4 mo as recommended by my ped.
  • Never. Doing baby led weaning and no rice cereal. Breast milk until 6 months and then introduce actual solids! Unless....my daughter requests otherwise!
  • Prob about 5 months but also no cereal
  • On Christmas my guy turns 4 months. Last night I fed him some Gerbers pears level 1. He did awesome and slept 6 hours straight. I gave him his milk like normal and this afternoon I did more pears. He has had milk allergy and bad acid reflux so after tons of different formulas, Zantac, Prevacid, rice cereal- now we are introducing food. So far he's very good.
  • Honestly, and I felt this way with DD1, adding food to my day is just confusing and a pain. Just when I had a routine down and a pretty predictable nursing schedule, I had to throw this in. When do I nurse? When do I give food? How much? So I will definitely wait until 6 months, if not later.
And no rice cereal. Oatmeal if I feel I need it. I tried baby led weaning but ended up doing puréed and finger foods and would like to try again with a more straight-up BLW this time. I'm a big believer in "food before one is just for fun" and most nutrition will come from breast milk.
  • Going to talk to pede at LOs 4 month appointment in a few weeks about his reflux. I'm not a fan of rice cereal but I've heard the one benefit is it can help some babies with reflux so if pedes recommends it we may try it at 4 months, otherwise we will be skipping rice cereal all together and starting baby food at 6 months.

  • I will start when my pediatrician says to start! I will probably give him the cereal as I know many pediatrician a personally who feel it is important nutritionally.
  • was planning on 6months, but i will go with doctors recommendation, i also assumed that we would start with rice cereal, but after reading posts like this and other research seems like might make sense to skip, will check with pedi on that too :)
  • 6 months and no rice cereal.

This was my first DD as well. I tried BLW and it didn't work for her. She still gets most of her fruit and veg from purees (Gerber pouches) because of texture problems. We saw a therapist and she was diagnosed with an oral motor function problem. Just FYI for those wanting to do BLW, it isn't always successful. I'll try again with this LO though.

We will introduce food between 6-8 months. I'm in no hurry. Nursing is all she needs nutritionally and it's so easy...and free...and less messy.

I agree with @slp213psu. It's just something to add confusion to our day and schedule and seems like more of a hassle than anything else before it's needed. I'm also very much enjoying the fact that it doesn't cost any money to keep him fed right now so I will be holding off on any food until 6 months. Exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months is safe and oh so cost effective. It doesn't make sense for us personally to add food any earlier.

    Edited to clarify.

Ditto for us! I'm in no rush ... and it's not like baby knows what he's missing yet ;) I may skip the cereal, depending on what the pedi says. I would like to try making my own baby food, but don't know if I'll have the time or energy. We have a hard enough time cooking dinner and making it to the grocery store as it is!
  • Nothing but breastmilk until 6 months and then BLW (no rice cereal). Breastmilk will continue to be the main source of calories/nutrients until at least a year and I'll likely continue breastfeeding beyond that to help "supplement" as he moves more into solids. I'm in no hurry to get LO eating solids - he will get there soon enough.

    Same here!
  • I'm going to try my little one with baby rice around 4 months just to see what she thinks of it. She's 14 weeks now. My health visitor said 4-6 months is normal and aptamil baby rice is 4 months aswell so I think I'll give it a go
