Did you go to the dentist while pregnant?

hi everyone!
I got to the point where I can feel 4 cavities in my teeth. I scheduled dentist appointment in 2 weeks which will make me 23 weeks pregnant. Did anybody go and got some work done on their teeth while pregnant? is anestesia ok when you are pregnant?
I did google it but would be nice to hear frompeople who actually went.

Re: Did you go to the dentist while pregnant?

  • I went and had a cavity fixed at about 13 weeks - no anesthesia was needed as it was very minor and they didn't need to freeze me. My dentist did tell me local anesthesia (freezing you) was fine during pregnancy though.

  • Our dental ins. kicks in on Jan 1, so I'll probably go sometime this spring (I'm in the same boat - there's definitely at least one cavity) but I didn't with DD with no immediate problems.

  • Yup, went to the dentist during my second trimester and had my teeth cleaned and did an exam. No cavities this time around (yes!). No xrays were taken either because of the pregnancy. Thankfully I had xrays done earlier this year. I get my teeth cleaned twice a year.

  • Yes!  Many dental insurance policies include an extra cleaning/ exam when pregnant too.

I had work done at the beginning of October and they wrote down the meds that they wanted to use to get approval from my OB (my OB had no issue with them).

  • I went this past Saturday and have two areas that need a little work, but I was told to come back in 6 months to have it done after baby is born.
  • Yes! It's actually really important to go to the dentist when pregnant as gum disease is a concern. Make sure to announce your pregnancy to avoid anything like x-rays, but definitely go!
  • I went about a month ago and got my cavities filled and they did use anesthesia. My dentist, OB, and mom (dental hygienist for over 20 years) all said it's completely fine to get them filled and cleaned while pregnant.

@AnyaZM I did go to the dentist, but not for new cavities. I do have a cavity, but my dentist refused to work on it until after I'm no longer preggers. I went to refill an old, broken cavity, so it wasn't as much work. I did get anesthesia, but it's a special kind. You can't get any kind with ephinephrine in it while pregnant. Make sure your dentist knows that you are pregnant and they will basically take care of that worry for you.
  • Went to the dentist a few times, both for a routine cleaning and an emergency extraction. They were willing to use anaesthesia but not laughing gas for the extraction (I opted out of anaesthetic because the anxiety associated with the needle would have been worse than the pain). They also did an x-ray for the extraction, though they took some extra precautions. They did not do my routine x-rays at my checkup. Dentist recommended that we postpone the follow-up (likely an implant) until after I deliver, though, so if you need more than just a filling you may have to wait a bit.
  • thank you all! I will probably ask my ob which medications are fine at the dentist just so I know.
  • Also, just to think about you will be on your back for a while. This may not bother you yet but I know I can only lay flat on my back about 5 minutes without starting to feel yucky, hopefully you're not at that point yet!

  • I went and had a cavity filled, if you call your ob they can send over a list of approved medications for your dentist to use :)
  • My dentist called my ob to get approval to fill cavities. They won't x-ray and they have to use a certain kind of novacane. It seems like it depends on your ob and dentist's preferences.

I didn't think about this! I have a regular cleaning appointment at the end of February when I'm assuming I'll feel super huge. I am def planning on keeping it however my dentist practically puts you upside down in the chair for cleanings. It's uncomfortable NOT pregnant! I guess I'll just call and see if they can do the cleaning somewhat sitting up...

  • In the UL dental check ups/work are free whilst you're pregnant (and first year afterwards) as we're at increased risk of gum disease, definitely recommend you go for a check up.

As other women have said there's a limit as to how much work they can do and it seems to vary from practice to practice. However, even getting a check up, full clean and polish, and noting any work for post birth is useful.

nope, not yet. with my first never actually felt any discomfort on my back, but every pregnancy is different)
  • I have been going for cleanings every 3 months- which I assumed was the recommended visit schedule while pregnant. I actually just got back :)

My gums are super sensitive and prone to inflammation as it is and pregnancy makes that worse. No cavaties, though!
  • I've been to the dentist for a check-up and some cleaning. It's mandatory for me in order to collect a maternity allowance. Like most women have said, pregnancy can really do a number on the gums.

  • I had a broken filling but my dentist refused to fix it until I was in my 2nd trimester. We fixed it without anesthesia at 15 weeks I believe.
  • It's really important to go to the dentist while pregnant because you're more prone to dental problems. I would talk to them (and you can also talk to your OB if you're more comfortable) and find out exactly what you can have and what they can do for you at this point. GL!

  • I'm going for my regular cleaning next week (I'll be 22.5 weeks). I'm anticipating a bloody gums mess, but should be fine otherwise. I told them I'm pregnant when I scheduled the appointment

  • Yes! I've gone twice for cleanings and maybe will go for a third towards the end of my pregnancy.

  • I just went earlier this week for a cleaning.  I couldn't believe how much my gums were swollen and sore after... but I think that's just a sign that regular dental checkups are super important!  Only downside is I was on my back for quite some time and a bit dizzy afterwards.  But my hygienist raised up the chair really slowly and I stayed seated for a couple of minutes afterwards to get my blood pressure back to normal before I stood up.
  • I went to get my teeth cleaned and it was fine

Update: my ob said its perfectly fine to go to the dentist and do dental xrays as long as they protect your pelvis and belly. She also gave me a letter to the dentist stating which medications to use. Ob said that 2 and 3d trimesters are perfect for getting your dental issues under control. Thank you, ladies!
