June 2016 Moms

Feeling Guilty

I had a turkey sandwich at lunch today. There were no other options, but I can't help but feel a little nervous and guilty. However, it was delicious. Second time mom problems! Any other rule breakers out there? ;-)

  • I had a cold steak wrap for lunch and a roast beef sandwich yesterday. As long as you don't feel sick you should be fine.

  • Lunch meats have a risk of containing listeria. If you haven't gotten listeria from the lunch meat there before, chance are you're okay. Don't stress, the stress is likely worse for the baby than the turkey.
  • I had a ham and cheese sandwich yesterday, oops! Honestly, I feel like I have more of a risk getting listeria from fruit. Sandwich on!
  • I feel you as I apparently eat raw eggs all the time without knowing about it. PP is right, you are more likely to get listeria from fruits/veggies (those tend to be where all the recalls are)...I get pre-cut fruit at the grocery store, which is also likely a no-no. At least each pregnancy is only around 9 months because I miss sushi.

What?! Precut fruit is a no-no? Oops again!

I've come the the conclusion that I will eat what I damn well please within reason :) as long as it is from a good source you should be good!

    This.

This pregnancy I just do not have an appetite. But when I want something to eat, you bet your booty I'm eating it!

  • If I could eat a turkey sandwich I would howz that mofo down. Gah. But yeah, exactly what pp said. My OB/ most guidelines say order from known, high-grade locations (no street meat) if you eat cold cuts due to listeria risk. And wash your fruit and veggies really well as these can also cause food borne illness and are often overlooked as a risk, but def don't not eat the fruit and veggies Bc of the risk! practice safe nomming, not abstinence, that's my motto ;)
  • I've been eating deli meats here and there. I couldn't help myself. I wasn't "allowed" to have it so of course I craved it! However, I do get it from a local deli that is very clean and seems to have very good/safe food. I did ask my doctor and they said that really anything can cause listeria and if it's a trusted deli I should be good! Of course that does not mean that I will eat it every day or tell people it's safe, this is a personal decision only I could make ya know. But I think you will be fine :-)
  • I've had sushi 3 times in the last month. Just heat your deli meat for 10 seconds, listeria is dead. I also eat ceasars dressing, shrimp and rare steak. I'm also going to show my OB the study showing i can eat during labor! Baby #4 is making me a rebel!
  • @sdnybrk yes! Get it girl!! My midwife said yes for food, then she remembered I am a VBAC and said probably not a good idea for a just in case. But I am thrilled at the fact that they do allow women to eat during labor. I think that is amazing!
  • I eat whatever... for the most part. My friend offered me raw milk last week, and I did decline I that.
  • I ate a turkey sandwich that I made this pregnancy already.  If the meat is from a good source I wouldn't stress too much.  I would love to eat a sandwich at a deli but I have celiac and often get cross-contanimated unless its a gluten-free deli...which I can't seem to find.  :(
  • I have had awful food aversions (mainly meat) since 6 weeks. I had a bacon turkey bravo at panera the other day and was proud of myself! I know I "broke the rules" but I actually got down some meat without vomiting!

Don't feel guilty, just don't eat cold cuts every day for every meal ;)

  • I ate a turkey sandwich last week. My OB never said anything about deli meat. She said don't eat or drink anything unpasteurized and make sure the fish I eat is low mercury and to limit the amount of tuna I eat. Like other's said, listeria is found in a lot of things, more recently in the bagged salads and fruit. I'm sure the doctors are not telling women to limit salads and fruit!
